What does ASL mean in Clash of Clans (and other game chat)?

If you have seen asl in Clash of Clans clan chat, it is one of two things — and which one depends entirely on where it sits in the sentence.

1. “As hell” — an intensifier

This is the newer meaning and the one most younger players use. It goes after an adjective and simply strengthens it:

• “this base is strong asl” = strong as hell
• “that raid was lucky asl” = lucky as hell

It spread through TikTok and Twitter in the early 2020s and is now the default reading in game chat, Discord servers and comment sections.

2. “Age, sex, location” — a question

This is the original chat-room meaning, from the days of AIM and IRC. It appears on its own, usually with a question mark, when someone wants to know who they are talking to:

• “asl?” = how old are you, are you male or female, and where are you from
• You will still see it in clan recruitment, where clans ask about age and time zone

How to tell the two apart

Position is the giveaway. After an adjective it means “as hell”. On its own, or with a question mark, it means “age, sex, location”. One thing it does not mean in clan chat is American Sign Language — that is an unrelated use of the same three letters.

A note on answering: you are under no obligation to give your age, sex or location to anyone in a public clan chat. A clan does not need those details to accept you, and it is safer not to post them in a channel strangers can read.
