Sending faxes from Sierra (MacOS) has changed now

Consider this situation, Mr. Adam wishes to send a fax and he has always relied on his Mac for many years. In Mac OS Sierra, it doesn’t work anymore: The USRobotics 5637 won’t appear as a printer option. Well, Mr. Adam, it is not just you or USRobotics which still support the famous USB modem model for internet connections via dial-up but it’s macOS Sierra which doesn’t support faxing.

However, in its support page, Apple claims that macOS still allow direct fax modem support but there are people who rely on faxing, have reported that how their various USB models don’t work as a destination for output.

But you can still send a fax via Mac – just not using a USB modem.

  • In case you are considering to swap or upgrade your printer, scanner or any combo unit, you can have a look at a multi-function printer which also comes with fax service. The Wirecutter also recommends HP OfficeJet 8720 All-in-one printer. Make sure that the MFP you are considering also supports Mac-based faxing and is compatible with macOS 10.12.
  • You can also sign up for a free fax service which is web-based. By this, you can upload any PDF, DOC file or any other files and still manage an online address book. Incoming faxes come via email or it can be also downloaded from the account page.
  • If you are looking for Mac fax app, few of this web-based service also come with Mac and iOS app which will link to the same account and allow you to print directly.
