iOS 27.2, released October 26, 2026, is the first big update to iOS 27. It teaches Siri AI five new languages, lets it recall earlier conversations, and quietly stamps an invisible Google SynthID watermark on images made or heavily edited with Apple's AI tools. It also patches more than 160 security flaws, so it is worth installing soon.

What Happened

Apple shipped iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 on Monday, October 26, 2026, about six weeks after iOS 27 reached the public in September. According to MacRumors' rundown of the release notes, the update is available for every iPhone that runs iOS 27, including the new foldable iPhone Duo, and iPadOS 27.2 covers every iPad that runs iPadOS 27. Apple released iOS 26.7.2 the same day with security fixes for people who have stayed on the older version.

The headline change is Siri AI, Apple's rebuilt assistant from this year's WWDC. It now works in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, on top of the languages it launched with. It still requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 or later, and it remains unavailable in the European Union and mainland China.

The second change is less visible but more consequential. Images created in Image Playground, and photos changed with the Extend and Reframe tools in Photos, now carry SynthID, the invisible watermark developed by Google DeepMind. Apple announced the plan at WWDC in June; 27.2 is the release that actually switches it on. MacRumors found that larger Clean Up edits picked up the watermark while small ones did not.

The third piece is security. Apple's own security notes for iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 list 163 separate CVE identifiers, spread across components from the Accelerate framework to WebKit and the kernel. None of the entries is marked as exploited in the wild, which makes this a routine but large patch rather than an emergency.

Why It Matters

For most people the update is about Siri finally reaching more of the world. Before 27.2, someone in Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, São Paulo or Madrid who bought a recent iPhone for its AI features could not use the redesigned assistant in their own language. Those five languages are spoken across some of Apple's largest markets outside the English-speaking world, so this is the release where Siri AI stops being a mostly English-language feature.

The watermark matters in a different way. AI-edited photos are now ordinary: removing a stranger from a beach shot or widening a frame takes a tap. Until now there was no reliable way for anyone downstream, a newsroom, a dating app or a court, to tell that an iPhone photo had been substantially generated. Apple adopting the same SynthID scheme that Google already uses for Gemini and that OpenAI and NVIDIA have joined means one detector can now check images from most of the large consumer AI tools. That is a real step toward a shared provenance signal, even if it is far from a complete one.

The security fixes matter because of their volume. Several entries describe apps that could corrupt or read kernel memory, and five describe web content that could lead to arbitrary code execution, which is the class of bug that spyware chains are built from. No one is known to be using these flaws yet, but once a patch is public, attackers can compare the old and new code to find them.

The EU gap is also worth noting. Siri AI is still missing there, and the one EU-specific change in this release is a longer App Tracking Transparency prompt that re-asks people every year. MacRumors reports the alternative prompt is required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania, which points to national privacy regulators rather than Apple choosing the wording itself.

How It Works

Siri AI's recall and new sources. Siri AI can now refer back to earlier conversations, so a follow-up such as "book the second restaurant you mentioned yesterday" has something to work with. It can also draw on more personal context: photos attached in Messages, the attendees of a Calendar event, voicemails, and your Safari history and Reading List. A redesigned Excluded Apps setting replaces the older per-app access toggles, giving one place to stop Siri, Search and suggestions from reading a given app. You can also now select and copy just part of a Siri answer instead of the whole block.

How SynthID marks an image. Google DeepMind's SynthID page describes it as an invisible watermark added to an AI-generated image when it is created. It is not a metadata tag that a screenshot or re-save would strip. The mark is woven into the pixel values themselves, in a pattern too faint for the eye to notice but statistically recognisable to Google's detector. Google says the watermark is designed to survive cropping, filters and lossy compression, and that it does not change image quality. Google does not publish measured failure rates, so those are design goals rather than guarantees.

Checking for the mark is a separate step. An iPhone has no built-in viewer for it. Instead, you upload the image to Google's SynthID Detector, or ask Gemini, Google Search or Chrome whether Google AI created or altered it. The detector reports whether it found a watermark. Because the scheme is shared, the same check now covers images from Apple, Google, OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao tools.

The detection is probabilistic. Google's developer documentation for the text version of SynthID describes three possible results, watermarked, not watermarked and uncertain, and says heavy rewriting lowers confidence sharply. Google does not publish the equivalent numbers for images, but the same logic is likely to apply: a mild edit should leave a strong signal, while an image that has been repainted, heavily composited or regenerated through another model may come back uncertain. A missing watermark therefore never proves a photo is untouched.

What else changes. Messages gains tappable suggestions drawn from the conversation, such as tracking a package or adding a dinner invitation to Calendar, with a choice of Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Maps and Flights and Packages. FaceTime's Dual Capture now works in group calls on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Duo, and calls can include a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner. Apple TV adds profiles with child accounts that default to PG and extends Multiview to iPhone, with up to four live sports streams at once. On iPhone Duo, 27.2 adds support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, an Edge Light that brightens your face on video calls, and a Shortcuts automation that runs when the phone is opened or closed.

Installing it. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. Back up first, since point releases occasionally need a rollback. If you rely on Siri AI in one of the new languages, set Siri's language under Settings after the update finishes.

What's Still Unknown

Apple has not said when, or whether, Siri AI will reach the EU and mainland China, or which specific rules are holding it back. It has not published a list of which Photos edits trigger SynthID; the Clean Up threshold that MacRumors observed is a test result, not documented behaviour. It is also unclear whether Apple attaches C2PA Content Credentials metadata alongside SynthID, which would let apps show an edit history rather than a yes-or-no answer.

Detection accuracy is the biggest open question. Neither Apple nor Google has published false-positive or false-negative rates for watermarked iPhone images after typical sharing through messaging apps and social networks. The redesigned Health app, tested in 27.2 betas, was held back and is expected later this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was iOS 27.2 released?

Apple released iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 on Monday, October 26, 2026. It is the first major update to iOS 27, which launched in September. Apple also released iOS 26.7.2 on the same day with security fixes for people who have not moved to iOS 27. You can install the new version from Settings, General, Software Update.

Which new languages does Siri AI support in iOS 27.2?

iOS 27.2 adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish to Siri AI. You still need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 model or later to use it. Siri AI remains unavailable in the European Union and mainland China regardless of which language you choose, and Apple has not given a date for either region.

Does iOS 27.2 watermark my normal photos?

No. Ordinary photos taken with the camera are not watermarked. SynthID is added to images generated in Image Playground and to photos changed with Apple's AI editing tools, such as Extend and Reframe. In MacRumors' testing, small Clean Up edits did not get a watermark while larger ones did, so minor touch-ups are unlikely to be marked.

How can I check whether an image has a SynthID watermark?

The iPhone has no built-in checker. Upload the image to Google's SynthID Detector website, or ask Gemini, Google Search or Chrome whether Google AI created or altered it. The detector reports whether it found a watermark. Because Apple, Google, OpenAI and others share the scheme, one check covers images from all of their tools.

Can a SynthID watermark be removed?

Google says SynthID is designed to survive cropping, filters and lossy compression, because the mark sits in the pixels rather than in metadata. It is not designed to stop a determined adversary, though. Heavy repainting or running an image through another AI model can weaken the signal, so detection may return an uncertain result rather than a clear yes.

Is iOS 27.2 an important security update?

Yes. Apple's security notes list 163 CVE identifiers fixed in iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, including kernel memory bugs and WebKit flaws that could allow code execution from malicious web content. None is listed as actively exploited, so it is not an emergency, but installing within a few days is sensible once details of the flaws become public.

What does iOS 27.2 add for iPhone Duo owners?

iPhone Duo owners get support for the USB-C Apple Pencil on both the inner and outer displays, an Edge Light that illuminates your face during video calls, and a Shortcuts automation that runs when the phone is opened or closed. FaceTime Dual Capture in group calls also works on the Duo, along with recent iPhone 17 and 18 Pro models.

Why is Siri AI still missing in the EU?

Apple has not explained it in the release notes. The only EU-specific change in iOS 27.2 is an expanded App Tracking Transparency prompt with yearly re-prompting, required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania. That suggests regulators are shaping Apple's European rollout, but Apple has not said which rules are delaying Siri AI or when it might arrive.
