Instagram is having some significant problems right now

Instagram has issues affecting users trying to open its app on their iPhone or Android devices. In addition, users on Reddit report that the app is continually crashing, making it difficult for them to see any posts.

DownDetector shows that there have been over 20,000 reports filed about the service since around 12:30 p.m. ET (9:30 a.m. PT).

Some are reporting repeated crashes while using the app. Although the problems don’t seem 100 percent consistent, the service appears to be working fine. Others, however, report repeated crashes, especially when trying to view stories. Redditors say restarting or reinstalling the app doesn’t appear to fix the issue.

People have been having issues with the app for around half an hour. However, other Meta applications, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, don’t appear to have the same problems.

As reported by many users on Twitter and also corroborated by DownDetector, Instagram went down at around 9:32 a.m. PT and is still facing an outage. The reasons for the blackout are unclear, but DownDetector also suggests that the platform has been working to fix these issues.

While some users are just experiencing slowdowns with the Instagram app, others can’t even log in to the app. In addition, some Instagram users can also not load new posts in their feeds, open Stories, or receive and send direct messages.

Other signs Instagram is down:

  • Unable to load your “Activity” feed with likes and comments
  • Inability to comment on posts
  • The browse/Search tab is not loading or only showing old posts and videos
  • Search not bringing up correct results

The “Sensitive Content Control” feature was launched on Instagram in July 2021. The filter was believed to keep users from seeing potentially dangerous and “inappropriate” material offered to them on the Explore page. However, as Meta / Instagram ramps up suggested content in response to the upgrade of TikTok, the tuning interest in the algorithm has evolved more impactful.

The feature was satisfied with backlash from many people in the sex workers, art globe, tattoo artists, and the cannabis endeavor since they could be excluded from the suggestions feed if their accounts or content were flagged. In the Help Center, Instagram represents what it sees as sensitive content, including posts with reports of violence or sexually definitive or suggestive, enabling controlled products and substances, etc.
