YouTube is set to introduce its inaugural authorized shopping channel in South Korea

According to sources, YouTube is preparing to launch its first authorized shopping channel in South Korea, marking the world's first official shopping channel on the platform. The channel is scheduled to debut on June 30 and will serve as a live commerce platform, featuring approximately 30 brands for live streaming shopping content. This move signifies YouTube's foray into official shopping channels, a milestone that has not been ventured into in any country previously.

A YouTube spokesperson expressed the platform's dedication to providing an engaging and enjoyable shopping experience for users, including in Korea. They hinted at potential experimentation with various YouTube Shopping features to optimize and deliver the best user experience. Last year, YouTube introduced a shopping tab in the Explore section, enabling eligible creators to tag products during livestreams or feature products under their videos, allowing viewers to make purchases.

During Alphabet Inc.'s fourth quarter 2022 earnings call, Philipp Schindler, the chief business officer of the company, emphasized the company's focus on making YouTube more "shoppable." This strategic approach aims to encourage more creators, leading to increased content and viewership, and ultimately providing more opportunities for advertisers. Schindler acknowledged the early stage of this initiative but expressed optimism about the potential of making it easier for people to shop from their favorite creators, brands, and content.
