The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are poised to be the most environmentally friendly Olympics ever. Organizers have undertaken significant measures to ensure minimal carbon emissions, reduced plastic usage, and an overall sustainable approach. These efforts are aimed at creating a lasting positive impact on the environment and setting a precedent for future events.
Major Changes for a Greener Olympics
Focus on Carbon Emission Reduction
The organizers of Paris Olympics 2024 are deeply committed to reducing carbon emissions. They’ve made significant changes, including limiting the use of diesel generators by connecting stadiums to the public electricity network, ensuring that these connections remain post-Games. This move is expected to drastically cut down reliance on diesel and subsequently lower emissions.
Use of Recycled Materials
A standout feature of these Games is the extensive use of recycled materials. Athletes’ beds in the Olympic Village will be made from cardboard, a practice first seen in the Tokyo Olympics. Additionally, tables crafted from recycled shuttlecocks and chairs made from recycled bottle caps will be used. These initiatives underscore the organizers’ commitment to sustainability and innovation in using everyday waste products creatively.
Minimal New Construction
Out of the 35 stadiums that will host various events, only two are newly built. The rest will utilize existing structures, including the iconic Stade de France. This approach not only preserves resources but also limits the environmental impact associated with new construction. The new venues, like the Aquatics Centre and the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics arenas, are constructed with recycled plastics for spectator stands, further enhancing the green initiative.
Plant-Based Food Options
Aligning with their green promises, the organizers have ensured that 80% of the food served will be plant-based. This decision promotes sustainability by reducing the carbon footprint associated with meat production. Locally sourced agricultural products will be prioritized to cut down on transportation emissions. In specific areas like Place de la Concorde, only vegetarian meals will be served, highlighting the focus on eco-friendly dining options.
Reusable Plastic Containers
To tackle the issue of plastic waste, beverages will predominantly be served in reusable plastic containers. This initiative aims to reduce plastic usage by up to 50%. However, a report by a French newspaper noted that around 40% of beverages might still be served in single-use plastic bottles, indicating a challenge in completely eliminating single-use plastics.
No Vehicle Zones and Cycling Networks
In a bid to promote eco-friendly transportation, Paris will establish a 60-kilometer cycling network connecting all Olympic venues. Half of this network has already been completed. During the Games, large parts of the city will become no-vehicle zones, encouraging the use of bicycles and reducing vehicular emissions (World Economic Forum).
