4 Things to Remember When Packing Up Your House

It's the day of the big move

Moving house is certainly a stressful time, even if you really do want to move. It’s a long and complicated process, and perhaps the worst part is actually packing up all of your belongings in preparation.

You need to be strategic when you pack. You want to make sure you pack up things you use the most last. You also need to make sure you pack everything in an order that makes sense to whoever will be unpacking your belongings.

Here are four other tips you can’t forget on moving day!

1. Packaging Materials

One major part of packing correctly and saving yourself added stress, in the long run, is to make sure you use proper packing materials. Packing breakable items in a large box with not enough wrapping, for example, will most likely lead to your items being broken. Choosing proper materials, like selecting the correct size and type of corrugated boxes, is essential for a smooth moving process.

However, it’s as important to consider the weight of what you are packing. For example, you might have a large collection of books that will fit in a large box. You’d like to pack all of your books together, so you opt for this option. However, when you go to move the box, you’ll find out that it’s much too heavy to move.

Packing your books or other heavy items in smaller containers might result in more trips back and forth to your new home, but they will be much easier to carry.

2. Set Aside What You Need

As mentioned earlier, you don’t want to pack up things that you use every day. One good solution for this is to have one container that you put everyday essentials in, like toiletries, a few changes of clothes, some silverware, and maybe a pan or two.

Once everything is packed up and you’re ready to spend your first night in your new place, you can take your box of “essentials” last.

3. Use What You Have

You’ll almost certainly need to use numerous boxes to move everything from one home to another, but you shouldn’t forget to use what you already have. For example, if you like to travel frequently, use your suitcases to pack up some household items. This also applies if you own items that have room for storage. If you have a small set of drawers where you keep your jewelry, you don’t need to worry about taking everything out only to put it back in.

To make things easier, you can use some tape to secure the drawers so you can move your jewelry box as is without emptying it or worrying that your jewelry will fall out.

4. You Don’t Need a Box for Everything

Lastly, look for smarter ways to transport your belongings. Boxes are perfect for providing structure and making transportation easier. However, soft belongings like clothes or bedding might actually be taking up unnecessary space in a box.

Utilize household items like garbage bags to transport soft clothes, pillows, stuffed animals, etc. They’ll be easier to carry, and you’ll be able to fit them in the nooks and crannies of your moving van or vehicle.

Final Thoughts

No matter how stressful you find moving to be, there are many ways to transform the moving process from overwhelming to manageable. However, we think these four tips are the most essential. Using the right materials is the most important thing you can do to make moving as easy as possible!

Once you’re all done, don’t forget to give yourself a night off with your favorite beverage – you’ll deserve it!
