iOS 26.4 Finally Lets Family Sharing Members Use Their Own Payment Methods

Apple has finally addressed one of the most frustrating limitations of its Family Sharing feature. With the release of iOS 26.4 RC on March 18, 2026, adult family members can now use their own payment methods for purchases instead of everything being charged to the family organizer’s credit card.
What Changed in iOS 26.4
Since Family Sharing launched in June 2014, every purchase made by any family member was billed to the family organizer’s payment method when Purchase Sharing was enabled. This meant one person was financially responsible for everyone’s App Store purchases, subscriptions, and digital content — a setup that created friction for many households.
The iOS 26.4 release notes now state: “Purchase Sharing lets adult members in Family Sharing groups use their own payment method when making purchases, without relying on the family organizer.”
How the New Payment System Works
Apple has also updated its official support documentation to reflect this change. The revised wording in the “How Purchase Sharing works” section now reads: “The family organizer pays for everyone’s purchases unless they turn off Purchase Sharing or other adult family members use their own payment method to make purchases.”
This means adult family members can now independently pay for their own apps, games, subscriptions, and other digital content while still enjoying the benefits of Family Sharing — including shared purchases, iCloud storage, and Apple One subscriptions.
Why This Took So Long
Family Sharing has evolved significantly over its 12-year existence, adding features like Apple Cash Family, Apple Card Family, shared subscriptions, and Screen Time controls. However, the core billing model remained unchanged until now.
The delay is somewhat baffling given how straightforward the concept seems. Many families avoided enabling Purchase Sharing entirely because of the single-payment-method limitation, which defeated the purpose of the feature for households where multiple adults wanted to share purchases without sharing a credit card.
The Bottom Line
iOS 26.4 is currently in Release Candidate status and should be available to all users shortly. If you’ve been holding off on Family Sharing because of the payment limitation, this update finally removes that barrier. It’s a welcome change — even if it’s one that probably should have been there from day one.
