Anthropic Redesigns Claude Code With New Desktop App, Projects, and Auto-Compact Feature

Anthropic has shipped a significant redesign of Claude Code, its agentic coding tool. The update includes a new standalone desktop application, a Projects feature for organizing multi-session coding work, and an Auto-compact function that automatically manages context window usage during long coding sessions. Together, the changes address the main practical complaints from developers using Claude Code for extended software engineering tasks.
The Desktop App
Claude Code previously ran exclusively in the terminal. The new desktop application provides a visual interface while preserving the terminal-first workflow that power users prefer. It offers side-by-side code views, a structured conversation history, and easier navigation between files and project contexts. For developers who found the raw terminal experience too sparse, the desktop app lowers the adoption barrier without removing the CLI option.
Projects: Persistent Context Across Sessions
The Projects feature allows developers to create named project spaces that persist system prompts, file contexts, and conversation history across sessions. Previously, each new Claude Code session started cold — requiring re-establishing context about the codebase structure, conventions, and in-progress work. With Projects, that context is saved and reloaded automatically. For long-running software engineering tasks spanning days or weeks, this is a material quality-of-life improvement.
Auto-Compact: Solving the Context Cliff
Long coding sessions with Claude Code frequently hit the context window limit mid-task — causing the model to lose earlier parts of the conversation at a critical moment. Auto-compact monitors context usage and automatically summarizes or trims older content before hitting the limit, maintaining continuity. Anthropic says Auto-compact prioritizes preserving the most task-relevant context.
The Bottom Line
The Claude Code redesign is Anthropic's clearest signal yet that it is taking the developer tools market seriously as a standalone product category. The desktop app, persistent projects, and context management close meaningful gaps versus Cursor and GitHub Copilot for developers doing sustained agentic work.
