Privacy Policy

The short version: your notebooks are stored on your iPad and are never uploaded. The only time your writing leaves the device is when you explicitly ask for an AI summary or flashcards, and then only the pages in question are sent — under a random identifier, with no name, email or account attached. We do not keep them. There are no ads, no analytics SDKs, and no trackers.

Who this applies to

This Privacy Policy describes how the StudyJournal iPad app ("StudyJournal", "the app", "we", "us") handles information. It applies to everyone who downloads and uses StudyJournal from the App Store.

No account, no identity

StudyJournal has no accounts. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number or contacts. So that the AI features can be metered against a monthly allowance without asking who you are, the app generates a random identifier the first time it needs one and stores it in your iPad's keychain. It is generated randomly, is not derived from any hardware identifier, and is not linked to your Apple Account or any real-world identity. It is the only "who" our server ever sees.

Your notebooks

Everything you write, draw, type and import — notebooks, pages, handwriting, images, sticky notes, starred pages, study sessions and exam countdowns — is stored locally on your iPad, in the app's on-device database. We keep no copy of your notebooks on our servers, and we cannot read them.

What is sent when you use an AI feature

AI summaries and AI flashcards are the only features that send your writing off the device, and only at the moment you ask for one. When you do:

A text digest of the relevant pages is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to our server, along with your random identifier.
Our server forwards that text to a third-party AI provider to compose the response. The request carries no identity — no name, no email, no advertising identifier — only the writing needed to answer.
The response comes back to your iPad and is saved into your notebooks on the device.

The digest and the response are not stored on our server, and our server does not log request contents. If you never use an AI feature, none of your writing ever leaves your iPad.

What our server does store

Against your random identifier, and nothing else, our server keeps only:

how many AI actions have been used in the current month, and which month that is; and
if you subscribe, the date your subscription runs until.

That is the complete record. There is no row anywhere holding your notes.

Subscriptions

StudyJournal Plus is an optional subscription purchased through Apple. Payment is handled entirely by Apple's App Store — we never see your payment details. To unlock the larger allowance, the app sends our server the signed transaction that Apple issues; our server checks Apple's signature and records the expiry date. It contains subscription status only, not your identity or payment information.

Location

If you allow it, the Today page shows local weather. The app requests a coarse, reduced-accuracy location and passes it to Apple's WeatherKit service to fetch the forecast. Your location is never sent to our servers and is not stored by the app. You can refuse or revoke the permission at any time in iOS Settings, and everything else in StudyJournal works without it.

Dictation

Voice-to-text uses Apple's speech recognition. The app asks for on-device recognition wherever your iPad and language support it. Where they do not, iOS may send the audio to Apple for processing under Apple's own privacy policy. Audio is never sent to our servers.

Third-party services

The only third parties involved are:

Apple — App Store distribution, subscription billing, WeatherKit forecasts, and on-device handwriting and speech recognition.
An AI language-model provider — our server sends it the text needed to compose a summary or flashcards, with no identity attached, as described above.

StudyJournal contains no advertising, no analytics SDKs, and no trackers. We never request the IDFA / App Tracking Transparency permission.

Keeping and deleting data

Deleting the app removes your notebooks and the random identifier from your iPad. Because that identifier is random and holds no personal details, we generally cannot tell which server record belongs to whom — but if you still have the app installed and want the usage record erased, email us and we will help you locate and delete it.

Children's privacy

StudyJournal is a study tool for students and general audiences. It asks for no personal information and builds no advertising profile. It is not directed at young children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Data security

All traffic between the app and our server travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). Your notebooks are protected by your iPad's own security — your passcode, Face ID / Touch ID, and iOS data protection — because they never leave the device except as described above.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and post the new version at this address. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
