1. WordPress.com

WordPress.com is probably the best platform for opening a new blog, espcially for newbies. Its free, it’s fast and it’s quite easy, within minutes you will be writing your article on your own blog.

Few Things about WordPress:

  • Started: November 21, 2005
  • Blogs till now: 70 million+
  • Pros: Easy, Fast and No technical knowledge is required.
  • Cons: Customizable to a certain extent (in comparison Self hosted Blog)
  • Pricing: Free, if you need your own domain name then they also have a premium plan, otherwise totally free with “yourname.wordpress.com“.
  • After you get comfortable and need to upgrade, then shifting to a self hosted blog on WordPress.org is easy and recommended.



2. Blogger

Blogger blog platform allows private and multi-user blogs. It was started by Pyra Labs, which was acquired by Google in 2003.

It allows you to add advertising to your blog (with Google Adsense) and earn money blogging.

If you want to open a blog for fun, then Tumblr should be ideal for you, as less professional blogs are found on Tumblr in comparison to Blogger and WordPress.

Sometime back, Yahoo bought tumblr and it’s now under their ownership.

Tinypress was not free a while back but; now it is free for everyone. Any person with coding knowledge would find this useful, but it does not mean you cannot open a blog on it.

Yahoo Pulse – now closed

Now Yahoo has Tumblr, which is quite good and have large number of active users.

I am sure there are many more platforms that can be in his list but for now I have chosen these over some others.
