10 Most Popular Programming Languages on GitHub

GitHub on last Wednesday shared the popularity index of various programming languages over the years. GitHub, as we know, is a collaborative code website launched in 2008, and the data GitHub shared tell us about the current trend. More than 10 million users use GitHub and its one of the biggest repository hosting service that builds the distributed revision control with the management of source code. Git has a command-line tool and provides a web GUI plus mobile and desktop integrations. The graph below does not show the most popular programming languages, but it somewhat clears the picture of what trend has been more famous in recent times. Here are the 10 most popular programming languages on GitHub today:

Java, as you can see, has jumped from the seventh to the second position that is due to Android platform and tells the demand for business and enterprise version controls. Ruby on Rails is another noticeable trend that has been around since 2008. This representation of popular languages is taken from public and private repositories that don't include the forks. Moreover, the calculation is done by Linguist, which is another GitHub project. Recently GitHub launched a Desktop app that will replace both Mac and Windows current apps and them into a unified experience. GitHub has not disclosed how many users have downloaded the desktop app and how many have chosen the website as per the code usage.
