Netflix Launches Playground, a Free Ad-Free Games App for Kids Under 8

Netflix has launched a standalone games app for children called Netflix Playground, and it's probably the most parent-friendly product the company has shipped in years. It's free with any Netflix subscription, contains no ads, no in-app purchases, and no extra fees — and it works offline.

The app is designed for kids aged 8 and under. It launched on April 6, 2026, initially in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a worldwide rollout scheduled for April 28.

What's In the App

Netflix Playground launches with games built around characters that young children already know from the service. The launch library includes:

  • Playtime With Peppa Pig
  • Sesame Street
  • Dr. Seuss's Horton!
  • Storybots
  • Dr. Seuss's The Sneetches
  • Bad Dinosaurs
  • Dr. Seuss's Red Fish, Blue Fish
  • Let's Color

The games are described as "instantly playable" — no loading screens or lengthy onboarding — and are available offline, which Netflix specifically flagged as useful for airplane rides and grocery trips.

The Strategy Behind It

Netflix has been steadily building out a kids content empire. In May 2025, the company acquired Sesame Street outright — one of the most valuable children's media properties in existence. It has also signed deals with popular creator Mark Rober and children's entertainer Danny Go!, and renewed Ms. Rachel for new episodes alongside new Sesame Street content.

Netflix Playground fits into that strategy by creating a dedicated, safe environment for the youngest users. Rather than routing kids through the main Netflix app — which also carries adult content — Playground gives parents a separate, sandboxed space they can hand over to a child without worry.

No Ads. No IAP. Really.

The most striking thing about Netflix Playground is what it doesn't have. In an era where virtually every kids' app on the App Store is either paywalled, stuffed with ads, or uses dark patterns to push in-app purchases, Netflix is offering Playground as a straight benefit of membership — with nothing extra to buy.

That's a meaningful differentiator from most mobile games targeting the same age group, where the base product is often free but the actual game experience is gated behind purchases or intercut with ads.

Available On

Netflix Playground is available on iOS and Android. It's a separate download from the main Netflix app, which means parents can install it on a device and hand it to a child without them having access to the broader Netflix library.

For the millions of Netflix subscribers who are also parents of young children, this is a free bonus they didn't have last week. The worldwide rollout on April 28 will bring it to the rest of Netflix's subscriber base.
