Voice Mode Comes to Claude Code
Anthropic is rolling out Voice Mode for Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant that has quickly become one of the most popular developer tools on the market. The feature lets developers speak commands instead of typing them, moving closer to a truly hands-free coding workflow.
Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, announced the gradual release on X on Tuesday. Voice Mode is currently live for approximately 5% of users, with a broader rollout planned over the coming weeks. Users who have access will see a notification on the welcome screen and can activate it by typing /voice.
How Voice Mode Works
The concept is straightforward: toggle on voice mode, speak your command, and Claude Code executes it. For example, you could say "refactor the authentication middleware" or "add error handling to this function" and Claude Code would carry out the request just as if you had typed it.
This builds on Anthropic's existing voice capabilities. The company launched Voice Mode for its standard Claude chatbot last May, allowing users to interact with the model via voice for general-purpose tasks. Bringing voice to the coding-specific tool is a natural extension of that work.
The $2.5 Billion Revenue Machine
Claude Code is not just a side project for Anthropic. In February, the company reported that Claude Code's run-rate revenue had surpassed $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the beginning of 2026. Weekly active users have also doubled since January. Those are extraordinary growth numbers for a developer tool that has only been available for a relatively short time.
The timing of this feature launch is notable. Anthropic recently raised $30 billion in Series G funding at a $380 billion post-money valuation. That kind of capital gives the company room to invest aggressively in product features that keep developers locked into the Claude Code ecosystem.
The Competitive Landscape
The AI coding assistant market is one of the most contested spaces in tech right now. Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI are all fighting for developers' attention. Adding voice interaction gives Claude Code another differentiation point, though the real question is whether developers actually want to talk to their coding tools or if this is a feature that sounds cool but rarely gets used.
It remains unclear whether Anthropic built the voice capability in-house or partnered with a third-party provider like ElevenLabs, with whom the company was reportedly in talks last year. Anthropic has not yet responded to requests for comment from TechCrunch.
The Anthropic Surge
Voice Mode arrives at a moment when Anthropic is experiencing unprecedented user growth. Claude's mobile app recently surged to the top of the U.S. App Store charts after the company refused to allow the Department of Defense to use its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. ChatGPT uninstalls surged by 295% in the aftermath, with users switching to Claude as a statement about AI ethics.
