Claude Can Now Generate Charts and Diagrams in Conversations

Claude AI generating interactive charts and diagrams in conversation

Anthropic has rolled out a new feature that allows Claude to generate custom charts, diagrams, and interactive visualizations directly within your conversation. The feature is available to all users in beta and is turned on by default.

How It Works

If Claude determines that a visual would be useful based on your conversation context, it will automatically insert an interactive image in-line — not in the side panel. For example, asking about the periodic table could generate a clickable interactive version, while a question about building engineering might produce a structural weight diagram.

You can also explicitly ask Claude to generate a diagram, chart, or table. The AI will create it on the fly and embed it directly in your chat.

Different From Artifacts

Anthropic already offers "artifacts" — a feature that lets Claude create charts, documents, tools, and apps in a side panel where you can interact with, share, and download them. The new visualizations are different: they appear directly in the conversation flow, but they are ephemeral. They change or disappear as the conversation progresses, unlike artifacts which persist.

The Competition

This launch comes amid fierce competition in the AI visualization space. OpenAI recently launched a ChatGPT feature that generates interactive visualizations of math and science concepts. Google Gemini can create interactive educational images too. Anthropic is playing catch-up here, but its in-line approach could prove more natural for conversational use cases.

The Bottom Line

While generating pretty charts in a chatbot is not exactly groundbreaking in 2026, the fact that Claude can now do this automatically — without being asked — makes conversations more visual and informative. The real question is whether ephemeral visualizations that vanish as you chat are more useful than persistent artifacts you can save and share.
