Anthropic's Claude Paid Subscriptions Have More Than Doubled This Year, Credit Card Data Shows

Dramatic upward-trending data graph showing AI subscriber growth

Anthropic's Claude is having a moment. A big one. According to an analysis of billions of anonymized credit card transactions from about 28 million U.S. consumers by Indagari, a consumer transaction analysis firm, Claude is gaining paid subscribers at a pace that should make OpenAI nervous.

Anthropic confirmed to TechCrunch that Claude paid subscriptions have more than doubled this year. And the data backs it up — consumers pulled out their wallets in record numbers between January and February 2026, with previous users returning to the platform at unprecedented rates.

What's Driving the Surge?

Three factors converged to create Claude's consumer breakout:

1. Super Bowl Ads That Actually Worked. Anthropic ran commercials during the Super Bowl that directly mocked ChatGPT's decision to show ads to users, promising Claude would never do the same. The spots pushed Claude's app into the top 10 and reportedly got under Sam Altman's skin.

2. The Pentagon Feud. When Anthropic refused to let the Department of Defense use Claude for lethal autonomous operations or mass surveillance of American citizens, it became a national story. CEO Dario Amodei's firm public stand in late February coincided with the sharpest spike in new user growth.

3. Products People Actually Want. Claude Code and Claude Cowork (released in January) have been significant subscription drivers. The Computer Use feature, which lets Claude navigate a computer independently, launched this week and sparked another surge. None of these features are available on the free tier.

The Numbers in Context

The majority of new Claude subscribers are signing up for the Pro tier at $20 per month — the same price as ChatGPT Plus. Data through early March confirms the growth trend is continuing.

But here's the reality check: despite the impressive growth curve, Claude remains well behind ChatGPT in total consumer numbers. Estimates for Claude's total user base range from 18 million to 30 million (Anthropic hasn't disclosed exact figures). OpenAI's ChatGPT still dominates.

Even after ChatGPT uninstalls surged 295% following OpenAI's DoD deal announcement, OpenAI is still gaining new paid subscribers at a rapid rate and remains the biggest consumer AI platform.

Why It Matters

What's significant isn't just the numbers — it's the why. Anthropic's growth is being driven by a combination of principled public stances (refusing military AI misuse), clever marketing (those Super Bowl ads), and genuinely useful developer tools (backed by massive infrastructure investment). That's a very different playbook from OpenAI's approach of ubiquity and enterprise deals.

The Bottom Line

Claude isn't beating ChatGPT yet. But the gap is narrowing fast, and Anthropic is doing it by being the "responsible AI" company that also ships genuinely good products. The question is whether consumer momentum can translate into enterprise market share, where the real money is. For now, though, the credit card data tells a clear story: people are increasingly willing to pay for Claude.
