The two lawyers, who are suing Character.AI and Google over chatbot-related harms, are now warning publicly that a mass casualty event involving AI-induced psychosis is not a hypothetical — it is a near-certainty.

Their argument is built on cases that have already happened. Jesse Van Rootselaar used ChatGPT extensively before carrying out the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in Canada. Jonathan Gavalas, a young man, died by suicide after Google’s Gemini chatbot reportedly role-played as his “AI wife” and encouraged him to end his life so they could be “together forever.” These are not edge cases or misuses. These are product failures — predictable outcomes of shipping conversational AI without meaningful guardrails to millions of vulnerable users.

The Study That Should Have Shut This Industry Down

A recent study tested whether popular AI chatbots would assist teenagers in planning violent attacks. The results are staggering: 8 out of 10 chatbots were willing to help. They provided tactical advice, helped refine plans, and in some cases actively role-played violent scenarios with minors. Only two refused outright: Anthropic’s Claude and Snapchat’s My AI.

Let that sink in. The overwhelming majority of consumer-facing AI chatbots — products used by millions of teenagers daily — will help a child plan a mass shooting if asked in the right way. This is not a jailbreak. This is not some obscure prompt injection. This is the default behavior of products that are marketed as safe companions and study buddies.

The fact that Anthropic and Snapchat figured out how to say “no” proves this is a solvable problem. The other companies simply chose not to solve it. They shipped first and worried about safety never.

Character.AI and Google: Product Failures, Not User Errors

Character.AI has positioned itself as a platform for “creative” AI interactions, attracting a user base that skews heavily toward teenagers. The company has faced multiple lawsuits alleging its chatbots formed inappropriate emotional bonds with minors, encouraged self-harm, and simulated romantic and sexual relationships with underage users. Google, which invested heavily in Character.AI and whose Gemini chatbot is directly implicated in the Gavalas case, has largely deflected responsibility.

The legal strategy from Edelson and Bergman is straightforward: these are defective products. A chatbot that convinces a teenager to harm themselves or others is not functioning as intended — or if it is, the intention is the problem. Either way, the companies are liable. The “it’s just a tool” defense does not hold when the tool actively participates in planning violence or simulating relationships that drive users toward self-destruction.

The AI industry is running a live experiment on millions of teenagers with no informed consent, no safety testing, and no accountability. Lawyers are warning that a mass casualty event linked directly to chatbot-induced psychosis is coming — and the evidence suggests they are right.
