Use the new version of Hotmail – called Outlook.com

It’s time to say goodbye to Hotmail, because Microsoft has relaunched it as Outlook.com, adding lots of new tools and a fresh design based on Windows 8 Metro. You can register to try the preview version now, and all your contacts, old emails, folders and filters will be carried over.

Perhaps the best new featre is the 7 GB of Skydrive storage for email attachments, so you won’t need to worry again about sending large files. Also impressive is Microsoft’s promise not to scan email content or attachments for targeted advertising, unlike Gmail.

And Outlook.com automatically categorises emails as they arrive, separating, for example, personal emails from newsletters.

Microsoft wants Outlook.com to be more of a social hub as you browse, so it shows photos from friends and messages from Facebook and Twitter. More usually, soon you’ll be able to make Skype calls within it. You can still use Hotmail for the time being, though eventually you’ll have to switch.

However, existing Hotmail email names in Outlook.com have not been reversed, so you must register yours if you want to use the same name. This means if you had john@hotmail.com, you won’t be guarateed john@outlook.com without re-registering it.

  1. Gone is the cluttered layout of Hotmail. Good riddance.

So, Outlook appears to be trying to become a sort of Google+ setup? Is that what they’re saying?

I wish them the best of luck.

I never really liked hotmail’s interface and after checking out outlook.com’s, I can say it is definitely better than hotmail’s.

  13. I was never a fan of Hotmail, but the Outlook features actually sound pretty interesting (like the 7GB storage) – I will have to check it out and maybe even sign up for an account :) I had no idea Microsoft was relaunching Hotmail, so thanks for sharing!

Great stuff as always Jaspal – thanks for keeping an eye out for the rest of us!

Hopping over to Outlook.com now to grab my preferred account info and check out all the new features. Hotmail has become my catch all for spam, I only use it for newsletter signups and such as the interface is so bulky and cluttered. Maybe outlook.com is the answer to making it useful again.

  18. Just took a look at it and it’s pretty neat. What I don’t like is those Bing shopping ads on the right sidebar. Seeing all those prices there kinda distracts you from actually reading your mail.

Outlook really has a better design compared to Hotmail/MSN but I still seem to prefer Gmail because I have got adapted to it. I did register few Outlook ids though.

I’ve never understood why Open Office does not incorporate an Outlook clone. It seem to me to be the one thing keeping it from really giving Microsoft a run for its money.

It’s good , somehow they try to catch the competition , but i still believe that Microsoft should end IE and Bing services also .! both useless.

How can I eliminate from right sidebar those distracting and screen-robbing bing ads? Often I can’t see the entire message /graphic.
