Earth day was started in 1970 for spreading awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. Earth Day is celebrated in 190 countries by one billion people & in US its been planned over seven months, on a budget of $124,000.
To know more about Earth day you can visit Wikipedia
Today I am presenting Top 10 ways to make our Planet Earth more livable and beautiful. I hope you will try to apply these methods and contribute to the noble cause.

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle : Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging (including the economy size when that makes sense for you) will help to reduce waste. And whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
2. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning : Adding insulation to your walls and attic, and installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home.
3. Change a Light Bulb : Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb. CFLs also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat.
4. Drive Less and Drive Smart: Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your community mass transit system, and check out options for carpooling to work or school. When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products : When it’s time to buy a new car, choose one that offers good gas mileage. Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient models, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide more natural-looking light while using far less energy than standard light bulbs. Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can’t be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
6. Use Less Hot Water : Set your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy, and wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old. Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households. Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry.
7. Use the “Off” Switch : Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you’re not using them. It’s also a good idea to turn off the water when you’re not using it. While brushing your teeth, shampooing the dog or washing your car, turn off the water until you actually need it for rinsing. You’ll reduce your water bill and help to conserve a vital resource.
8. Plant a Tree : If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.
9. Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company : Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.
10. Encourage Others to Conserve : Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbors and co-workers, and take opportunities to encourage public officials to establish programs and policies that are good for the environment.
These 10 steps will take you a long way toward reducing your energy use and your monthly budget. And less energy use means less dependence on the fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming.
Let us know what other things we can do to save energy and live more efficiently. We would to hear on on it from you guys.

Learn your history: Earth Day is nothing more than a birthday celebration of the father of communism — a mass murderer. Earth Day creator Ira Einhorn picked April 22 specifically for that reason. Of course, Einhorn took the whole “recycling” idea a little too far when he “composted” his girlfriend in a trunk in his apartment. I will never “celebrate” a day that was created by one murderer to honor the birthday of another murderer.

Computers are responsible for gobs of energy waste. Of all companies, HP is doing lots of work to reduce energy consumption in PCs – http://digital.newzgeek.com/its-green-revolution/

No one mentions birth control ????
Talk about lack of circumspection. One generation of planned parenthood would go a long way towards making most solutions just plain redundant. One generation, folks.

I agree totaly.. people polute and use energy. Not cars, not planes.. People.

hahaahha. who cares who started it?!! its a good thing to celebrate! we should be worshiping the earth instead of an invisible spirit that we think may be nice to us AFTER we die. lets start celebrating life NOW!!

Tightening up the air leaks and replacing non-energy efficient windows/doors is a huge one. I work with people to replace their old windows and doors and you would be stunned at how much heat is bleeding out through and around the windows.
The other one is replace old appliances like freezers that are inefficient. The new ones save a lot of power.

Great tips, especially about using the off switch. I know so many people that just leave their computers running all day long, and they are just uselessly burning energy which is bad for their wallets and the environment.

Nice point, the world will be a better place if all of us can take this points very serious and encourage other to do the same as well.

In fairness, most of these are not things you do on Earth Day or on any one day. These are mostly lifestyle or systemic changes to be made, and those take time. But a few are things that can be actioned right now. Like turning off the computer (as soon as I hit “submit comment”, of course.

steps I have taken are…
1/ moved closer to my job
2/ All light bulbs are ES type, with exception of outdoor flood lighting which are controlled by passive infared detect switches. Some ES bulbs are dimable (ES bulb is miniture flourecent as mentioned) 20 Watt is equal to 100W incandescant bulb)
3/ Remote control sockets / outlets on key devices. E.g TV, audio, garage door opener, computers etc are controlled by a remote control which can switch off all items before leaving house or at sleep time.
4/ insulated roof when insulation is on special offer… up to 75% off
5/ fitted gas filled double glazing and uv pvc doors all round.
6/ got a plug in watt power meter to check all my stuff.. This may surprize you, but the garage door opener uses 4 watts 24/7 so is now switched off when not needed. The microwave used 4 watts also so weswitch that off as well. In fact all the stuff which was switched off and on standby was using 35 watts… every hour of every day of every year.. Not any more.

I completely agree with the commenter who said these are *lifestyle changes*… not something you pay attention to once a year!
I am trying to incorporate all of these things, and some are harder than others.
Also, I’m having doubts about CFL bulbs: we replaced ALL of our bulbs, but then I’ve heard that they contain mercury?! What I am supposed to do with them if they break and how and where to dispose them when kaput?!

My husband and I have already acted on every one of these items. These are good tips, not only for one day of the year but for everyday of the year. If we all made a commitment to celebrating Earth Day every day of the year then we could leave a better legacy for the next generation than the self-absorbed consumer driven – disposable society behaviors that prevail now and are polluting the planet we all rely on.
P.S. I’m one of those unusual computer users who turns her computer off when it’s not in use.

It’s great to make a long lasting change on Earth Day rather than just switching lights off for an hour. Insulating your roof and tinting windows is a great help to reduce energy costs.

A particular of my favorite matters about blogging is this community of bloggers. We aren’t cut-throat. We share successes and miseries. And when anything operates, we don’t keep it to ourselves – we want it to perform for all people. I adore blogging and hope that it becomes full-time only one day, but I delight in the understanding and growing (the journey) and am an exceedingly patient man.

A day? People actually believe that they’ll be able to save the planet in one day? Earth day is a great thing but our planet does not need just one day. It needs 365 days.
