A virus in our computer just acts like a infection in a human, it spreads all over body, infecting and harming in every way it can. But we are lucky, that there is a way to protect our computer by a good and effective antivirus program.
In the starting days of Antivirus softwares, they generally detected viruses in computer. But nowadays, they are totally full protection software which basically acts like a layer over all programs in your computer to protect from various threats like virus, trojan, worm, malware, spyware, rootkit infections etc.
Even I recommend to use only one Antivirus program because more security programs can become cause of slow computer speed. But, there are many free Antivirus programs in the market and it’s difficult to choose the right one from ever growing number of Antivirus programs.
Don’t forget to
subscribe to our RSS-feed and
follow us on Twitter for recent updates.
Coming to the point, in this article, I looked at several free Antivirus programs available which are best till know in protecting your computer from various viruses, threats and malware infections.
So, here’s the SaveDelete’s compilation of top 10 free Antivirus programs available in the market to make your computer virus free without losing any penny.
1) Microsoft Security Essentials : This antivirus is from Microsoft team and totally free for Genuine Windows users. It has a good detection rates and most of all very light on resources. Automatic updates works perfectly fine. To see the whole review and how to install MSE on your computer, please click this link.
2) Avast ! Free Antivirus : Avast is often seen as the biggest competitor to other Antivirus programs as it is very simple and easy to use. Avast is loaded with most features, real-time protection capabilities including web, E-mail, P2P, network shields, boot-time scanning. It is very light on resources and hardly take minutes to schedule scans. But there is one negative point that you have to register first and it takes time to register. Otherwise it is widely preferred Antivirus program for many users.
3) AVG Free Antivirus : AVG has been around in the Antivirus market from ages and gained lot of loyal users to their kitty. They also provide upgraded version which is very costly but I believe that their free Antivirus program is great for users having personal computers. AVG user interface is pretty simple and it takes a minute to install on your computer.
4) Bitdefender : Bitdefender is one of the best contender for top Antivirus software which provides advanced protection against viruses, phishing attacks, spyware, malwaere and various other real-time threats. It takes only minutes to download it and work without slowing down your computer speed. There is also a very nifty feature included in the latest version that it helps to protect leaking your personal information via E-mail, Web or IM.
5) Avira AntiVir Personal : One of the best pick if you are looking for simple to use and light on Antivirus software. It works perfectly fine to detect virus, spyware, rootkit threats. The best part of Avira is that it is quiet outstanding in terms of finding malware. Few false positives about Avira is that it does not inlude E-mail scanner in free version, but if you open any infected E-mail, it comes again into action. And with every update, it shows advertisements but you have choice to disable them. I still believe that Avira is strong Antivirus program and you should try it.
6) Comodo Antivirus + Firewall : This program was started as a commerial Antivirus software but now available free for both personal and commercial use. It is very simple to use, light on resources and doesn’t affect your computer speed. It offers real-time scanning, automatic updates, email scanning, detects worms and spyware. The virus definition is update daily and Host Intrusion Detection allows you to protect from attacking viruses, spyware, and other malware before they infect your computer.
7) A – Squared Free : This program was detecting and removing only trojans in the starting but recently included the Ikarus antivirus engine. It scans your computer from Trojans, Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Worms, Bots, Keyloggers and Dialers. The only negative point about this software is its large virus update size. Its comes with Antivirus + Anti – Spyware.
8 ) Rising Antivirus : Rising Antivirus Free Edition is Antivirus solution from China. It is a simple program which runs low on the memory and do every bit of task that every other Antivirus software does. It protects computers against all types of viruses, Trojans, worms, rootkits and other malicious programs. One feature is good is that it provides full protection to your account information. It mostly updates on alternate days and if you are looking for “install and forget” program, this program is best.
9) PC Tools Antivirus : All-in-one program which can protect your PC from virus, worms, trojans and also included scanning of incoming and outgoing mails. It provides you on-demand scans and automatic updates. The negative points are that free edition offers limited support and updates are non-priority based which are essential for real-time virus protection program.
10) Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 2010 : As the name suggests, its comes with Anti-spyware and Antivirus program which provides full security to your computer. It detects almost every infection like spyware, adware, trojans, viruses, worms, keyloggers, identity theft, phishing, popups and malicious websites. It updates automatically mostly on daily basis.
1 More Bonus Free Antivirus
11) DriveSentry : DriveSentry is free anti virus software for personal computer use only. It comes with Anti- spyware, Antivirus and Anti-Malware program. It provides real time protection and updates regularly.
Hope you like my list of top 10 free antivirus. If you know any free Antivirus which you feel that it would fit in the list, please be kind and share with others in the comments section below.

Nod 32 is one of the most effective Anti-virus softwares at present. Its detection rate for new malicious threats is far better than Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky.
The only downside is that it is a paid software so it can’t be in this list.
Also Comodo AV has a lockdown mode which is the single best protection against variety of threats that keep coming every day.

The best two, IMHO, are:
Panda Cloud Antivirus & Avira’s Antivir version 10.
These are both ‘cloud based’ programs. This means that they don’t need definition updates ever, as the ‘cloud database’ is always up to date.
April 20, 2010 at 10:18 pm
They need internet connection to work. That is a REALLY BAD disadvantage, because you might be spreading shit while trying to take care of it…
April 20, 2010 at 8:22 am
Why is Panda Cloud Antivirus not mentioned here? I found it to be very good against most trojans. Most of all it is really light on resource usage. Perfect for users who hav old hardware.
April 20, 2010 at 10:21 am

May 18, 2010 at 6:27 pm
its also free of working software like photoshop etc.
May 20, 2010 at 12:02 am
GIMP and bunch of other programs, and honestly no one needs photoshop unless he/she is professional Graphic Designer and to touch up photos or add effects there are bunch of web based apps like pixlr, picnik, aviary and may more… Linux is fast, secure, safe and very easy and above all it is free and never stops working when you need it.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Microsoft Security Essentials performs. My guess is it’s going to be a major flop…especially since the users aren’t paying for it. AVG on the other hand has been around for years and years and has a paid version. It works pretty well and will likely be around for a long time to come.

I would bump Avast! to the top due to the recent fiasco with MSE upgrading to a new version. Thousands of people, including me on tne machine I had it on, were left with no protection after the “upgrade” disabled the old version but failed to install the new one. The old version was not completely uninstalled and the entry in add/remove programs would not work. You had to run the setup in a DOS box and even then manually remove the folders from Program files before being able to install the new version. This was the second consecutive “upgrade” that behaved like this. The affected machine is now running Avast! along with my main computer. MSE works fine when it’s working but beware the program upgrades.
July 7, 2010 at 4:04 pm
BAD BAD MSE! (SPANK SPANK)
Two years ago I went from Avast! to MS Live until they stopped support for it and I shifted to MSE after finding out how to get rid of the ghosts from live and Avast! that were still hanging around. Last month a trojan made it through that was severe and posed as a virus protection program that installed on my machine, it was called AVfakpro or some such that shut me down for 3 days and included a nifty popup generator to harass me while I tried to kill it. I suceeded at killing it manually and thoght my problems were over. NOPE apparently it was at a site I had recently frequented and I contracted it again and it’s the same but rewritten with better code that has left me in a bad spot. I safemoded my puter, pulled up essentials and again killed it. Next day it appeared again and now it’s lodged in my boot sector apparently and I can’t get rid of it. Unfortunately I can’t even do a fresh wipe and install as I didn’t get system disks with this puter. (and threw out the case with the code sticker when I installed it into my beloved tower). So now I need to buy Windows AND get another AV program running. (NOT MSE for SURE!)
July 7, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Jeff, before you do all that, download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The free version will do. Install it, make sure it’s fully updated and scan with that. It should find and remove that rogue program. To be sure it does you might want to run the scan in safe mode.

1st-I used almost all antiviruses from this list
(out of Microsoft, Comodo and DriveSentry …); here is missed Avast Free, is better than many from here, even if give a bit too many “false positives”, better so than too few real positives
(right now im using 3 (free only!) 2 from list and 1 not; of course only 1 active/enabled, 2 only for on demand purposes; and as extra 1 antispyware (also free), enabled ofc …)
2nd-Norton SUX! my opinion … k, not very sure if last n versions … i tried it 1 maybe 2? years ago, i hate when i cannt disable/deactivate guard/background scanning! doesnt matter what antivirus, can be the best from world, isnt for me … PC Tools and Spyware Doctor also SUX! its detected my 100 % SAFE Bitdefender as rogue antivirus!! O_o can you believe that??
3rd-Best 2 from all the world are, nooo, not NOD :p, but Kaspersky and Bitdefender!! after these 2 maybe McAfee …

Well, I use Avast Free and I am pretty pleased with it. It does not catch ALL viruses but it does a pretty good job and it does not slow your PC very much like norton, kaspersky or panda. Other cool thing for avast is that it always blocks iframe viruses in sites.

Great summary of the antivirus software. I personally recommend avast! for it’s large signature database that is updated frequently enough to keep you safe from the most well-known viruses and latest outbreaks. It’s downside is that it doesn’t always catch less widespread viruses.
