Having done with the Top 10 best free antivirus software for year 2010 two months before which was appreciated by our readers and downloaded best antivirus software according to their needs.
I switched from Windows Vista to Windows 7 some time before as I was pretty annoyed by the slow speed of Vista. And believe me Windows 7 is really brilliant operating system that I am waiting for long enough from Windows team. It is not only fast but the glossy looks, default sounds and themes make it more awesome.
But we all know that as earlier Windows OS versions, Windows 7 is also prone to virus and spyware attacks. And to stay free from viruses, it the most basic and fundamental task of any Windows user to find the antivirus software programs. So, I thought to research best antivirus software for Windows 7 and end up with some really great options that provided maximum security against viruses, malwares and several other threats.
Antivirus software listed below are fully compatible with Windows 7 – 32 and 64 OS and available freely on the internet for single and non-commercial use.
So, have a look on SaveDelete’s assorted list of Top 8 best and free antivirus software for Windows 7 to keep your computer safe against various virus threats and hackers.

I am currently using Using Security Essential. Before that I had Avira which, according to my ISP, reducing browsing speed. and Before that I had AVG which worked very good before I had to remove it because it was flagging some authentic files as Viruses.
Nevertheless, it is a good list and I will surely use other listed AVs.

Are you kidding me? The only one worth mentioning is Avira. The rest arent bad but AVG is by far one of the worst out there……..all there detections are 99% of the time false positives. I work at a computer store and the only two ya need are Avira and Malwarebytes. Im thinkin someone got paid to mention there names! Avast is by far the second worse on the list! I cant beleive ya folks put so much faith in AVG its by far one of the worst out there. Using a good browser like chrome or firefox will prevent alot of online attacks. But then again in my 12 years of using windows i have never been infected not once. In the long run it comes down to knowledge and actually taking the time to read. I dont even use any protection on my own computer anymore cause they all suck for resources.
I can’t believe you still get paid to fix computers. You have absolutely no clue about avg apparently. Most likely you are getting paid by avira to promote their half-baked garbage. No one I know has EVER had a false positive with AVG in the last 3 years. Nice try though. No, not really.
Avg sucks, period compared to Avira. Heck, even MSE is better than AVG. Low false positives on AVG? Thats because of the overall low detection rates…
Excuse me son? No false positives with AVG? I would of took your comment more seriously had you not said “EVER.” I am a heavy browser and downloader and AVG gave false positives constantly, after changing settings it performed a little better but the false positives continued only at a lesser rate. I use Avira now and not only does it give fewer false positives but it has a better detection rate. Like the guy above I use Avira with Malewarebytes and any basic firewall, currently have Comodo, and for the last 18 months or so I have had great success at fighting viruses and other bugs with ease. This is truly all opinion and performance is based on each user and how they use the internet. But I would avoid AVG, Essentials and Comodo for anti-virus.
LOL, you’ve only been using Windows for 12 years? That’s just sad. And if you knew how to correctly fix computers then you’d know how to fix yours so that it was able to run antivirus without sucking up resources.
u get a virus since u dont have no anti-virus..so get one like norton not heavy at all
But i cant say much i get so much business from folks that use AVG……….they remove whats a false positive from legitimate software. And im the savior that fixes it. Sometimes i love being a geek! Sometimes it makes my job hard. But i still make money off these failures of software. Avira and Malwarebytes………..i have yet to have a returning customer!
“I dont even use any protection on my own computer anymore cause they all suck for resources.”
You won’t know when you will get attacked by a nasty virus. AV are like seat belt, not because you drive accident-free for years doesn’t make you invulnerable.
I may agree that Avira is a great AV and AVG as the worst. I used AVG for a long time but switched to Avira when AVG seems to go downhill with their antivirus. I even installed them at the same time once and guess what, Avira always detects the virus first before AVG and not one virus detected by AVG that are not detected by Avira.
I also noticed that virus makers today concentrate more on infecting and propagating their creations through USB flash drives and Avira seems to be good at counteracting them. It even disable suspicious autorun.inf.
@J I’m a 21 y/o computer enthusiast…
As politely and courteously as I can, I would like to inform you that despite Valrog’s slight impudence AVG definitely does output a significant amount of false-positives; that is, indiscriminately marking generic Trojans.
If you’ve ever been familiar with P2P programs, AVG often marks keygens and cracked .exe’s as virus’s when they’re by nature designed to modify programs/systems to unlock features. Sometimes AVG even goes as far as to delete w/o asking!
About whether who/who is getting paid to promote whomever. Doesn’t matter, users will make choices depending on whom they think is best. Personally, I tried Panda-anti-virus and I loved it. On that note, Malwarebytes is incredible; and even if it is an anti-malware software, it should be on this list. It’s a powerful free-ware program that’s capable of removing even rootkits!
Well let me say this. If you are using keygen and cracks, then you should also be smart enough to put in exceptions for said items. After all, key gens and cracks are not generally considered legitimate software in the IT security industry. Being an enthusiast, I can’t expect you to know this but if you were to ask a professional, key gens and cracks are not acceptable.
Also, given the amount of virus issues using p2p software and the primary use of p2p(piracy), I do not consider a “false” positive on p2p software to be a bad thing. When you actually work in the IT industry, you will understand.
If home users wanted to treat their desktops as a business environment, then you’d be right. Your industry standards can stay in the industry. Judging one environment by the standards of the other isn’t going to really solve anything.
However, software is written by people in the industry to try cover the broadest range possible, now isn’t it. If software does not do exactly what you want, you need to learn how to do minor customization. Sorry but computers and software are not made by the most basic users. Sometimes, a user has to actually learn what they are doing.
The article is about the best FREE anti-virus software. Using AVG in a professional environment without paying the licensing fee is PIRACY, as it is only available for use in the HOME environment for free. As a professional you should already know that.
I agree that AVG gives all kinds of false positives; one recent upgrade cycle made computers bricked for those who were unfortunate enough to download the upgrade in the hours before it was yanked.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials and have had great success and no headaches.
“key gens and cracks are not acceptable.” The heck you say? If it was not for them I couldn’t install and play my downloaded software. Keep on paying for everything Mr. Brady.
key gens and cracks are not acceptable? They are to me being I download and install free software. Keep paying for everything Mr Brady.
I lean more towards Microsoft Security Essentials and avast! Free Antivirus. I think they’re both absolutely great. I’m not a big fan of Avira Antivir or AVG. Avira sucks on spyware and AVG has failed me time and time again.
The point of these is that for the average user they are better than nothing
I have run my own computer business for countless years AVG, McAfee, and Norton by far have given my users nothing but problems. Sptbot Search & Destroy and Microsoft Security Essentials is all I ever install now and I have yet to have 1 dissatisfied customer. BYW Widows Defender is another good onr that is preinstalled in Windows Vista and Windows 7. As far as OS go stay away from Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try Avira and compare. You will be surprised how many critters are lingering in your HD that AVg can’t detect.
I use Security Essentials for live protection because it’s nice and lightweight, but the only time I had a really bad case (Alurean rootkit was the main culprit, I believe it was called), it wasn’t SE but a combination of MalwareByte’s Anti-Malware and Super Anti-Spyware that got them out. Those are the ones I recommend you keep installed for heavy duty use if something ever comes up. Also, you may have to rename the exes if you get a really bad case like I did that blacklist the programs from running
Avast is great. I hit the occasional sites that are marked as being malware and Avast blocks the particular link from loading.
And there isn’t much difference between the free products and the paid products. Other than some fancy advertising.
I thought avast and avg were the same but I guess not
@FreeIsGreat: Just use Firefox, it will let you know about malware sites as it references Google. You’re asking for it if you’re still using IE.
all these programs are good anti-virus but do very little keeping spyware out. I have uninstalled avg, avast, avira, several times and installed CA and found several threats and CA removed those infections
AVG 9 does good on spyware. Earlier version did not scan for spyware.

AVG is NOT a good antivirus, it was several years ago, but no longer.

At the moment for all my noobly fellow humans I advise MS Security Essentials, although it’s got a WGA check during the download, I’ve never seen it not download (on any version, legal or illegal
Seriously, I nowadays use all microsoft’s security stuff, it’s not that bad anymore. And if you want an overview, check a site which tests things with proof

They have 2 types of tests, one for normal virusses, and one for new/future virusses (heuristic tests and such), and give detailed results withouth being bias’d who pays them as far as i can tell….
Yes avg is bad which is why it consistently rates very well in tests performed by people who know what they are doing.
see the test i posted down below… they do not score high…

The best antivirus is always the windows update
. Without holes in the system there is no viruses. From the free ones I use avast. From the paid ones I think that Kaspersky is the best.
@What
Or use chrome which has a competent security team, comparable to microsoft. Firefox has a slow response time (not nearly as terrible as apples though) for fixing security problems, and because firefox has taken such a large portion of the market, more and more threats will be made toward it, and mozilla is not equipped or used to dealing with 30,000+ new threats a month like IE is.
Sure and that is why more threats come through IE and firefox right?
That’s why so many sites recommend ie 6 over firefox right?
I have installed all 8 anti-virus programs on my PC, however, now the pc runs REALLY REALLY slowly.
hahaah — well, the heaviest tank is never the fastest!
you do NOT need 8 avs…that will only eat up all your running memory you only need 1 or 2 running and you need to make sure they are compatable….
I have used AVG free it is light and good antivirus…..Really!
Install Linux
No.
no doubt. I just installed windows 7 as a vm on my linux box and am amazed that I have to run anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware just to keep it protected. But I need win7 for work and since its in a vm I can take snapshots periodically. I don’t really want to have to install it again from scratch.
I’ve been using Microsoft Security Center on a Windows 7 build for nearly a year now, I’ve never experienced any problems, seems to cut out everything that tries to hijack and install on my PC. I used a lot of others in the past, but they either slowed my machine down or were inadequate. Thumbs up to Microsoft for both MSE and Win7.

I haven’t had any positive experience with AVG. Malwarebytes, however, has saved my butt more than once from near disaster more than once. Another software that has saved me is one called Spybot-Search & Destroy. I had a particular infection and had tried everything. SSD was finally went deep enough to root out and kill the pest.

Yeah not really. If you bothered to check more than ONE site, you would see they are about equal. But hey, you get an A for showing little effort.
And ^^^ That right there is why I use AVIRA. It scans really quickly, doesn’t hog resources at all (I hardly notice it’s running) and it finds a LOT of things. During the installation you can even set what kinds of threats you want it to watch for (rootkits, etc.) and I usually hit “select all.” I haven’t had it miss anything yet.

I work on virus removal quite a bit here at the shop. What I look for in a good antivirus application is:
1) Runs in safemode (deviate the overhead of anything else including viruses excluding rootkits)
2) Installs in safemode
3) Proactive protection
4) Frequent definition updates
5) Low overhead (doesn’t consume every bit of computer resource to run)
6) Suite or standalone? (it’s better to have a suite of tools bundled in)
so which one works the best overall for u guys??

Can’t believe a word of what said here. The best way to judge is to visit their support forums! I use Avira and noted we are harping about Avira 9 or earlier…. what about the latest Avira 10 – that is complete CRAP, so much so FP after FP, problem after problem don’t take my word see for yourself!
I down graded back to Avira 9 until my license runs out. That is how I will judge AVS from now on, you just can not believe on what you read, these test sites way aren’t they all getting the same results, why are they all testing differently? No doubt favors and backhanders are to blame, people are so gullible to believing what they read.
I go and look at their forums and support sites that paints a better picture.
AVG is great bull! AVG is great because it was free then became bloated, yes it was great at one stage… just like many others. We forget a good AV can change overnight through some update or version change!
Right now AVG is not anywhere near the top and Avira is sinking after their Pro-active module was added in V10….
…why should their advisers tell people with certain problems to un-install the Pro-active module that they incorporated? Does this not speak volumes about the company?
This alone is not mentioned in this and other reviews – why?
What Avira version are we reviewing here and why is there no mention?
Last August AV-Test.org did a test on detection rate of free AntiVirus
These were the results on August 2009.
Detection Rate [August 2009]
1. Panda Cloud 99.4%
2. AntiVir Personal 98.9%
3. Avast 98.2%
4. Microsoft Security Essentials 97.8%
5. AVG 95.8%
This August AV-Test.org did certification on Security Suites.
Here are the results of those who have free versions.
Certification [August 2010]
1. Panda 16
2. AVG 14.5
3. Microsoft 14
4. AntiVir 13.5
5. Avast 12.5 of 18
A product had to score at least 12 points to get certified.
On a side note AntiVir tied Panda for first in removal rate. This is news because critics have always questioned the removal rate in all AntiVir products.
Panda and AVG tied in prevention rate. While Microsoft was best in usability.
All in all it means this
AntiVir:
+ Great Detection Rate
+ Great Removal Rate
- Average Usability
- Average Protection
AVG:
+ Great Protection
+ Great Usability
- Low Detection
- Average Removal
Avast
+ Good Detection Rate
+ Good Usability
- Low Protection
- Average Removal Rate
Microsoft
+ Good Detection Rate
+ Good Removal Rate
+ Great Usability
- Average Protection
Panda
+ Great Detection Rate
+ Great Protection Rate
+ Great Removal Rate
+ Great Usability
Overall I think the best combo for free versions is Panda Cloud and AntiVir Personal since Panda Cloud can now be used alongside your current AntiVirus solution.
Its also imoprtant how much a resource hog the A_V is especially the real time protection which has slowed my system to a crawl on numerous occasions. I uninstalled norton last night for this reason. As soon as removed (and it had to be physically unistalled, not just switched off) the syetem became usable again.
No matter who secure it is, if it makes your machine unusable its pointless.
Just install Linux and you don’t have to run any of this crap.
I have multi OS in my laptop. I have Linux and Windows. I need one for Windows because most of my programs are only supported in windows.
Hippie
Linux are for Tech geeks, hackers and those too cheap to pay for an operating system. The normal user won’t use nor will they like Linux. Which isn’t as eye pleasing or as easy to use as Windows. You can’t install software as easily as you can Windows either. Any third-party software not in Linux’s OS library has to be installed using commands. Where as Windows is a simple click and and install.
People use Windows because it’s the simplest to use, best looking and offers the best out of the box experience plus it’s using what their familiar with and the average user won’t try new things. They use Internet Explorer because it comes installed on their computer and it’s the same reason they use Windows Media Player and Windows Live Messenger.
@Matt, evidently you’ve never tried Ubuntu, it’s just as easy as Windows, if not as easy. And looks just as good. KDE version that is.
Come on! you have not even tried linux! The advantage of linux over windows is that you can install software through package managers and the terminal as opposed to windows where you cannot install software indirectly but an advantage of windows over linux is that nearly all applications are written for it.But another advantage of linux over windows is that it is much more secure.
Windows sheep. You do have other choices.
Windows Security Essentials has become my top rated free AV. Although I’ll be looking seriously at Panda’s free offering. After that, I’ve like Avast.
Hippie – not all those other choices are appropriate for everyone. I love the OS I use, but it would not be good choice for a most people.
James´s last [type] ..Video-How To Update Windows Manually
I use Microsoft Security Essentials, mainly because it is free, and has been performing well in independent AV tests. I used Avira for some time, and it also performs well in the tests, but Avira usually tested high for false positives.
Before those I was an AVG user, but they seem to be slipping in performace as of late, and I found that AVG become too resource intensive.
Hippie – yes there are other alternatives, but Windows can pretty much run anything on the planet. Unix may be a better system, but it isn’t for the average user. Macs – well their security is based around “ignorance is bliss”.

i use windows 7, i used all most all antivirus and i found that Microsoft security essentials is the best one for windows which doesn’t slow down the system and gives updates every 4 hours…
I haven’t used Panda or Clam but have tried all the others, right now with my Window 7 64bit system I am using Microsoft Security Essentials after switching from Avira and I really like it.

OK I’m lost you guys are all over the place.
I have some kind of antivirus virus, this web page comes up says I have all these issues, and need to fix them. This is the second time I have gotten this virus and I am using Microsoft Security Essentials, which doesn’t even detect the infection.
I have installed the free “Stopzilla” which found some “DOWNLOADER NY” but will not remove the infection until I fork over the cash I don’t have nor want to spend, until I register the so-called free application.
I use win7 and just want some good reliable detection, is this too much to ask?
Vipre is the best
Thanks

I’ve used AVG and Avast, mostly AVG because it was touted as the second best for people who couldn’t afford Kaspersky from a few years ago. AVG is good but it’s not flawless. It can be a resource hog, especially while scanning, and doesn’t always play nice with my other programs. For instance, Surf Shield will crash Firefox whenever I do a GIS (Google image search.) It takes so long to scan each and every link that my browser thinks the script on the page has stopped working and sends me dialogs to shut it down. If I don’t choose yes, eventually it just crashes the whole thing.
I also get a lot of false positives on P2P sharing programs. To the poster who slams everything P2P as piracy: Learn to Internet. Plenty of legitimate software companies now use P2P to deploy their products so that they can save bandwidth and give the user faster downloading speeds. The most recent one I can remember was called Panda (not the antivir) was flagged for months by AVG as a generic trojan.
Right now I am not using any antivirus program. I had to uninstall AVG after a recent update of theirs caused Windows 7 to BSOD. They rescinded the update but I kept receiving it anyway and it would auto-install itself any time I rebooted.
I have been using Avast for quite some time now and have found it very good. I doubt if the Microsoft one is as good. What ever the big name of the company, it is relatively very new to the anti-virus field and I would stick with the ones that are in the space for some time now. Have tried AVG as well, but avast felt much better.

Hi, I’ve been a computer tech for about 20 years, personally I myself have got tired of fixing silly issues and no longer use a windows based operating system for general use. I have a spare hard drive with windows XP on it to play the odd game (windows vista & 7 are too bulky and slow for this). I use a Linux based operating system nowdays (last 5 years) and will continue to. My partner still has windows on her laptop, but generally uses my computer now (my spare desktop & laptop also has a linux based OS on it).
This way I only have to deal with fixing one computer. Also I have found that the linux based OS’s generally perform better, don’t bloat after a few months. There are advantages and disadvantages to both windows and linux etc. It’s about which is suited to yourself.
I just don’t have virus or malware issues, but then most of the time I’m not on my main PC as my partner is on it.
Since 1990 I had had used several antiviruses for Windows, but now on I use Microsoft Security Essential (for 60 personal computers and several note books), which I should say that it is the best one ever made. All my jobs from rendering videos up to playing heavy games such as supreme commander 2, company of heroes TOV have have no conflicted with this one. It seems Microsoft’s anti virus software programmers know how to provide better protection of their own OS. Thank’s Microsoft. Go … go .. go !!!
I’m using Kaspersky PURE right now and it’s really good.. though it’s not free on the the site it has a 30-day trial period. You can test it and see it for yourselves.
I like Norton. It can update for new viruses every three minutes give or take. I guess one of the questions would be is would you want a free version that only updates for viruses once a day, or every time there is new info on new viruses. HP told me that Avast is one of the best free ones you can get and that AVG is one of the worst. Dell also told me that AVG is one of the worst. I would have to agree with them about AVG. I had used AVG in the past and have gotten viruses more then a few times. I am strongly considering if I want to buy Norton for about $40.00 after my 60 free membership runs out or go with HP’s suggestion about Avast. I have been doing alot of research on the internet on several different web pages and it does not seem that AVG is good. Microsoft Security Essentials seems to have way more positive feed back then many other free ones. I am just saying that It’s down to three AV for me to decide wich one I want. Either stick with Norton, Avast, or Microsoft Security Essentials. I will prob stick with Norton bc of the constant updates that do not have to be done manualy. But who knows.
I’m using AVG Free even after I switched to Windows 7. Of course, I had to download it again (http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free), but it seems to perform ok.

e-scan sucks dont dow him
Been trying to set up a recently purchased, not new, Toshiba C660 loaded with Windows 7, for my adult daughter.
After uninstalling the ‘rip-off’ 30 day trial McAfee bundled with the software, installed Avast Free and the system slowed to a crawl. So slow in fact that I thought I had screwed it up, so did a ‘bottom-up’ rebuild with the recovery media I had taken the precaution to create as a first step.
Everything O.K. again. Uninstalled McAfee. AOK. Installed Avast Free, system slowed to a virtual dead stop, and when programs did load they were ‘not responding’. Uninstalled Avast Free. Everything AOK again.
Don’t know how much the problem is down to Avast, I have no problem with full version running on Win XP x64 with AMD dual core CPU, or how much to the fact that the C660 only has a single core processor, but for chrissake how many people actually need more than one core and, more to the point, how many everyday programs take advantage of multi cores. Not many I suspect.
After reading practically all the posts on this site have decided to try MSE. At least it should have been written to work with Windows 7, not against it.
I found kaspersky the best option available in the market as a antivirus as well as for online protection of data
Just discovered that AVG (free) has injected script into all my software, without my knowledge or permission (perhaps permission is buried in their user agreement?). They put the script into the header:
/A2EB891D63C8/avg_ls_dom.js
googled on that and apparently this can and has cause problems.
For example, see softpedia news on this:

I am absolutely shocked and plan to remove AVG
can anyone please tel me which is the best antivirus for a windows 7 currently???
i m in a stage of big dilemma…please please tell me which 1 is the best to use..

i use avast! until now and i noticed that it is good compared to Avira n AVG.. the reasons i said that because when i was using AVG before, it gave me lots of false detections and when i want to install Avira, it mess around with me. Seriously i cant install it but with avast! just simple installation and there u go!! Despite, automatically update function is great whenever i forget to update it when i am online….have a good try ^^
My vote goes to AVAST… I think its better among all the antivirus you mention above.. May be many friends are not agree with me… but AVAST change my Internet life:-)

Registered version of kaspersky for internet security or as a anti virus both are helpful
i like Avast Free Antivirus
Based on my xperience, Avira does better than AVG….i agree with the “false positive” of AVG… Before i have Avira,i was using AVG and it annoyed me sooo much it keeps blocking when i want to install games… it’s so nonsense and i quit after a few days…
Kaspersky internet protection is the best
Try Kaspersky lab 2012 with 3 years ….By buying it That is enough to protect Your Com from Any Virus ….I give 100% sure
idk about any of these they are all crap

I use AVG free edition and I didn’t have any problems since now.All other antivirus software are useless…at least for me.
Microsoft Security Essential has always done the trick for me. Sometimes it fails to delete a virus but it as never failed in identifying and quarantining it !
So in my opinion go for the MSE right away !
P.S. ESET NOD 32 was good once but its free version isn’t much good now !

I Use Microsoft Security Essentials, and it works Perfect,

Avast is great. I hit the occasional sites that are marked as being malware and Avast blocks the particular link from loading.

Avast was great till this last recent software update. Now it’s intrusive to the max and slows you down so much so, I deleted it right away. Gonna try Avira.
I´ve AVAST since many years and I never had any problem. I don´t want to even think in change. for me AVAST is the best
i use avira and avast ….
