It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.
3) T@b ZS4 Video Editor : ZS4 Video Editor is free to download and use. It is video editing and compositing software which aims to provide media experts with a facility to combine a variety of media types(currently photos, videos and audio files) into one or more output files.

erm…actually, its very restricted, animation wise. But if you’re a starter and you need a very basic software then that is a good program. I like doing animation, but I find the windows movie maker a bit too useless at doing just that. Its effects are limited and the software is too simple. If you want something for professionals, you can try the Sony Vegas Pro 10.0, I love this software, it’s not free, but worth paying for it. Goodluck!

I understand your feelings, I was a music publisher, and am a composer /writer, so having work copied and handed out, cuts me out from benefiting from my own work, my profession.
However, it is just as valid that there are those program writers who do want to share, and write such programs FOR the benefit of those who are not as able to purchase retail. In a free society, this is how it is. If I want to give something to you,something that you want, are you going to turn it away? There was a time that only a privileged few could have, or afford the ability to express their creativity in such a way. Expect free, or not, it is the way it is. Would you rather legislate and pass into law – no free software?

Movie Maker 2.6 stopped working when I tried to edit a large number of video clips. Is there a limit? What would you recommend for Windows 7 that works with large number of video clips, please?

Why don’t you separate the video into small parts?
(Ex. If the video you want is as long as 20:00, you could slice it to clips in 0:00-5:00 then 5:00-10:00 then 10:00-15:00 and lastly, 15:00-20:00. After doing each movie part, convert it to a video, so you have 4 videos.)
After this, combine the number of slices (videos) you have as a new file. There you go!
(That’s how smart a fourth grader can be!)

i think you can try “nch videopad video editor”. it has the feature that you’re looking for. although it’s not free (unfortunately), it’s probably the cheapest software among others which have the same feature and is also easy to use.

About every six months I look for something to replace VirtualDub as I occasionally find a format that doesn’t readily have a VFW codec but have never found anything to touch it.
I have tried Windows Movie Maker a few times, but have always been disappointed with its speed and stability.
I would like to see a table of supported formats and whether files can be edited without recoding.

Anyone know whether any of these programs are capable of applying a watermark to a batch of files? I have 200 video files I need to watermark and really dont want to do them all individually. Just need the same image file applied as an overlay to the same position on all files. Someone please help! Ive been looking for ages and cant find any batch processing tools that support watermarking

Ditto Colin… but I’m happy I found this site, even though I think I am going to run out to Best Buy/Office Max or Office Depot and buy my next editing software. Ive been using Windows Movie Maker for the last 2-3 months, creating a birthday video of my dads party.. WMM has me burnt out, it has given me one problem after the next. Although one advantage wmm has given me, is the more Ive had to REdo/alter or recreate the same movie due to “unspecifed error” during the failed burns, my ideas for the movie seem to get better & greater… I am more than pleased with the outcome of the movie> Now if I could only get it to burn! *Excellet Job Yogesh Mankani & Thank U much, this page is “a Must” bookmark & favorite

Hope someone can help me. I have been working with Windows Live Moviemaker and I can’t seem to get a handle on cutting/inserting and making a smooth transition. Also, I don’t see any audio, where you can make a clip and sync the voice with the video or also voiceover. Also, where is a good place to find sound effects/music mp3 downloads (Grandma here…little slow but am catching on!)
Its a good experince to work m\with these softwares.it’s awesome.
I was just getting in to full swing with video editing on Mac when I lost use of it due to battery problems which I cannot afford to correct. So this list is a gold mine of information to at least help me produce something on my ancient PC. Thanks a million.

Thanks for the info. However, I would like to add one more such software. This is called “Cyber Link Power Director(9)”. I haven’t used it yet but have seen my friend at work with it. This particular software is much simpler than many others with features like slow-motion and so on included. We expect Yogesh to educate us on this.
Looks like a great program but, this post was about free software. The price of this Cyber Link Power Director(9) is not too bad but, when in a pinch and looking for a quick fix for free, $80+ is not gonna help! Lol! But, I’m glad you posted it. I like what it’s saying! Once I get THIS project done, I may just buy that one! Thank you!

WOW! Movie storm is pretty much more better than everything here and can do more than that while keeping it simple. check it out, but its a trial, theres plans to pay for, but id rather just buy it for $225. or rent it for 10 a month. something like that. WOW!!
I’ve found windows live movie maker to be very good as well, although i have found no sound affects or in-video clipping. You can just trim the edges, not inside the video.
double click your video clip and you can cut and stuf

Um… where did you download it? I’m at the Blender website now and the windows download (32 and 64 bit) offers a download that is JUST an exe file. They also both offer a “zip archive”, maybe that’s what you got? (it also has an exe file in it… so i’m not sure WHAT you actually downloaded).

Great effort putting this together. It’s almost a definitive guide… Just some issues with Windows Movie Maker. It is painfully slow particularly when converting MPG’s or the like. It then insists you use WMV as output format, which on some media players in not compatible. This adds another time consuming step (ie converting WMV to XVid or MP4) to getting the job done. So I am not the biggest fan of it. However it is almost idiot proof and shows what can be done with a little resources vs back yard software engineering by students in their spare time.
Video Spin, as far as I can make out is not freeware, but on a trial time restricted basis. Should perhaps not be on this list in that case. I may be wrong.
AVIDemux – I find has trouble dealing with sound and picture and keep the two in sync. I’ve since given up on trying to make it work.
I have bought a few tools over the years and quite enjoy Cyberlink’s PowerDirector, and make copious use of WinAvi as well.

What software would you recommend to edit an amateur video & sound. There is a lot of unnecessary sound in the background, the picture is not very clear and the color tone is not so good.

You know WHAT is perfect, VideoPad Video Editor from NCH. Software!
It is Free but with one or two limitations, I use all there software, and most of all it is free. There is a list on the site explaining wich software has restrictions, they have tons of Software. I Use now the Wavepad software for 5 years, Free too. Incredible!
For me the problem with most of the -FREE- software is that you can not edit in HD.
That’s a great list mate! I’ve personally used Movie Maker and VirtualDub for quick video edits.

VideoPad has a Freeware issue it is shown on some sites just look for the freeware in BLUE text
I have used it a lot and it records the edited video fairly quick. I find .mpg to .mpg is very good as most of the better free editors seem to only go for .avi
