Whether we talk about a small or large business, Naming always means a lot.  A good name which effectively illustrates the brand will make your company talk of the town.

I think anyone coming with a business idea, would put same effort as they put into market research, writing the business plan, choosing geographical area and investing money. In simple terms, your brand name should communicate the significant description of the product you are coming with.

On the other hand, you have to be make sure that the name you are choosing is already not trademarked or under registration by some other person.

There is also lot of debate over what is a good business name among the naming experts? Some of them think that the name should be informative, so their target segment will know immediately about the business, while some believe that name should be a blank cardboard to create an image.

Given all the above considerations that help to make a good company name, I believe that there are 4 golden rules which you should always keep in mind while naming for a business.

So, let’s discuss the 4 golden rules of naming a business which will help you to create a distinctive yet effective brand image.

1) Stay Away From Big Brand Names : Never try to copy a look-alike or sound-alike name of established big brand names. It is not good to choose a name that impersonates an already big brand because this is not productive in the long run of the brand.

2) Over – creativity Is Also Harmful : Your relation with a customer starts with a name, so your name should be creative from others to remember. But overdoing creativity is a cause of confusion. So always avoid over-creativity while naming of a brand or company.

3) Time Is The Key : Be patient while choosing name for your company. Do some basic market researches; ask your friends, family, relatives to catch their impressions on different names. Always do 3 to 4 rounds of brainstorming sessions with company officials and naming experts before selecting any name.

4) Big Picture : Do not think small. Today you are working locally, but think of the future; your name needs to make sense globally. A good name is only that is free to travel all over the world without any trademark issues or language problems.

    Also stay away from a combo business name…….examples: twig and thistle, milk and honey, flower and whiskey, paper and thyme – Those are novice business names and too cute. Stick to one syllable and word if at all possible. These types of names are easier to remember and say.

    Thank you for the post and tips. While I eventually will open my freelancing business (winter of next year) – I used an acronym, which can also be helpful. The name I have thought of and still am contemplating is ideal WINDS – “A Web, IT, Networking & Design Studio”. So for my 2 cents, another tip for everyone still deciding on a name, is you may think of using an acronym to implement into it.

  13. My name for my graphic design business is simply my name. I can just add taglines I suppose but I consider names at times.

  14. My last employer tried to copy Nationwide Insurance. They got some business from it and then got a big Ol Cease and Desist order from Nationwide’s lawyers. I came up with a new name for them. I was just their graphic designer. I cant remember why I chose that name- dont want to mention it here though.
