The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) head Tom Wheeler talked about the low, mid and high spectrums at a press conference back in June 2016. In 2011 as well, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed some facts categorizing radiofrequency radiation as a potential 2B carcinogen. Not too long ago, the $25 million National Toxicology Program notified the kind of radiofrequency radiation currently used by cell phones has the tendency to cause cancer. Hence it is only natural that we all wonder where 5G fits into this scenario. Given the fact 5G is all set to operate on these frequencies 4G, 3G and 2G may take the backseat. Though, the tendency, which differs from country to country, is to use higher frequency bands for 5G.

Another study conducted in New York explored different possibilities related to 60GHz waves and concluded: “the research on infiltration insight proves that over 90% of the transferred power is gathered in the epidermis and dermis layer.” The mmWave, as considered by Dr. Yael Stein of Hebrew University, can cause physical agony as our nociceptors would blow up acknowledging the contact as a damaging shock. Therefore, we are most likely looking at the possibility of multiple skin ailments, infections and other forms of biological pain for the human skin.


A research carried out in 1994 documented the low-level mmWave radioactivity can lead to lens opacity in rats which are associated with the production of cataracts as well. In another experiment conducted by the Medical Research Institute of Kanazawa Medical University, it was concluded 60GHz mmWave antennas have the potential to cause thermal harm of random nature at different levels. The thermal effects carried by mmWave can apparently penetrate the external surface of the eye. A Chinese research conducted back in the year 2003 also recognized the damage to the lens’ epithelial cells in rabbits after exposure to microwave radiation for 8 hours. Then again in 2009, another examination was conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Pakistan which summarized that EMFs radiated via mobile phones can cause derangement of chicken embryo retinal differentiation.


A research study conducted in Russia back in 1992, established when frequencies began to fall in the range 53-78GHz – the same as 5G intends to use – radiation compressed the heartbeat rate and the inconsistency triggered a rise in overall stress factors amongst rats. Another Russian research which experimented on frogs exposing their skin to mmW reported the heart rate modified afterward (arrhythmias).


In the year 2002, Russian research observed the effects of 42GHz microwave radiation which was brought in direct contact with the blood of a healthy mouse. It later recognized exposing the whole body of a healthy mouse to low-intensity EHF EMR had a severe influence on its entire immune system. 


In 2016, Armenian research observed the mmW at low intensity in order to predict the forthcoming environmental change following the introduction of 5G. Their study on E-coli and other bacteria showed the waves affected their growth and also changed the properties and activities of the cells. The alarming question therefore is will the human cells be treated the same way?

How We Can Protect Ourselves from 5G

Here are three steps which we can take: 

–    We all must learn and understand what our exposure to different types of radiation can cause. Moreover, the fact there are different types of EMFs already in a place and how they operate, it is essential to keep educating ourselves on a daily basis. 

–    As a precautionary measure, we should learn to gauge how to use an EMF meter to analyze and identify hotspots.

–    Work mindfully on reducing the overall level of your exposure, which suggests either eradicate the source or move away from one in order to protect your body from radiation.
