When you are actively applying for jobs or being chosen for a position, your current employer will query your previous employers for an Experience Letter to validate the experience you have. Several applicants list extensive experience in their resume or curriculum vitae, but in reality, they don’t have that much training. That is why managers check a candidate’s experience when hiring him or her to the Company.

Is an experience letter different from a relieving letter?

A letter on work experience is a document the employers provide when their employee is relieved from their duties. A letter about work experience is a vital tool that an employee can use to hunt for future jobs. The paper will tell prospective organizations about the strength and flexibility of the nominee. It can show the candidate can handle other sets of obligations. The work experience letter also provides details relating to work that the applicant feeds in his CV. It further verifies the reliability of the information provided in a CV related to the past of the work.

An experience letter format must have the following points:

  • Employee’s name.
  • Service tenure in the company
  • Appointment date of the candidate at the time of joining the Company
  • Mention the successive changes in appointment due to promotion, etc.
  • Final appointment at the time of leaving the company
  • Character and conduct of the candidate during his tenure in the company
  • Salary at the time of leaving the Company
  • Reasons for leaving the job This is true.

Relieving letter

Relieving letters, on the other side, are concerns to the contractor by the organizations that have correctly withdrawn from his position and are used as a confirmation of work history for prospective companies. Working for two companies at the same time isn’t legal across the globe. Thus, a letter of relief includes a notification to the future employer that the candidate in question has fulfilled his assignments and performed his responsibilities effectively. Now he is relieved and is free to join any other company. The employers must issue a Letter of Relief on the same day you leave the organization. If you do not receive a letter of relief, it is assumed that your resignation has not been accepted, and you are still an employee of the Company, a part of the organization. It indicates that if any company accepts your resignation, they would only issue a relieving letter.

The relieving letter only formally shows that the applicant has been relieved from his duties of providing proof to the potential employer that the employee has left his previous Company on his wish and is not working simultaneously for the two organizations. It is therefore also a message to future employers that the candidate’s resignation has been approved and that he is relieved of his existing roles and responsibilities.

Relieving letters thus prevents employees from taking holidays or leaves to try out another business. A relieving letter has some prominent features:

  • Relief letters are published on the organization’s letterhead.
  • The relieving letters are addressed as “To Whomsoever It May effect” unless expressly informed by the employee at the point of resignation;
  • It should be noted at the beginning of the letter that the organization accepted an employee’s resignation.
  • The employee’s present title should also be stated in the Relieving Letter.
  • The employee’s commitment to the business should also rely on it.
  • A Relieving Letter should include the joining date along with the date of resignation.
  • In addition to further wishes for his future efforts, the letter should end with a credit statement to the employee for his sincere dedication.
  • The wording should be precise and polite in a Relieving Letter.

What to do if an organization refuses to provide an experience letter?

  • Read your letter of appointment accordingly. Remember, the organization can’t stop you or ask you to resign with no reason whatsoever.
  • In case if you are asked to resign, then you need to be given proper time as well as the reason for the same by your employer.
  • Make sure that your letter of appointment informs you that in the case of no notice period, you will lose your paycheck. Make the organization write to you that they cannot pressure you to resign if you are ready to serve your notice period.
  • Send a letter to the Labor Commissioner in case if your employer is not following the procedures. Further, send a copy of the same to your employer.
  • Take legal action only as a last resort.
