Google, Meta, and Qualcomm collaborate to advocate for the advancement of accessible digital environments
Alphabet's Google, Meta Platforms, and Qualcomm, along with seven other tech firms, have united to advocate for open digital environments, responding to new EU tech regulations. This collaboration, named the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), aims to endorse more accessible platforms and systems to stimulate growth and innovation in Europe. CODE intends to collaborate with academics, policymakers, and companies to explore digital openness and its attainability within Europe, focusing on implementing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and forthcoming EU regulatory frameworks.
Under the DMA, tech giants acting as gatekeepers must permit third-party interoperability with their platforms and enable their business users to promote and finalize contracts outside the platform. Stan Larroque, founder of Lynx, emphasized the importance of openness in fostering innovation and competitiveness within digital ecosystems.
The coalition includes Honor, a Chinese smart devices manufacturer; Lenovo from China; Lynx, a French augmented reality startup; Motorola, a US telecoms equipment maker; Nothing, a UK electronics manufacturer; Opera, a Norwegian tech firm; and Wire, a German messaging services provider. Their collective goal is to promote cross-industry collaboration to unlock digital ecosystems, advocating for seamless connectivity and interoperable systems.
