Working in Silence: Beneficial or Detrimental?

Silence

People study and work in a lot of different ways. For example, some people like to multi-task and work on a lot of different things at the same time. Others prefer to concentrate on one task and complete it first. It is important to acknowledge that everyone is going to different and it will be up to you to find out the best way you like to work.

In particular, one thing that a lot of people are confused about is whether to work in silence or with background noise. Well, there are several reasons why you should consider working in silence when you have to complete an important task. Here is why.

It Can Reduce Stress

There are a lot of studies to suggest that working in silence can actually reduce stress levels. Indeed, there can be a number of reasons for these findings. First of all, having noise around in the background can cloud your thoughts. This means that you cannot think straight and if you have a lot of work to do, this can make you stressed. But, if you are working in silence, you are alone with your thoughts, you are able to concentrate on the task in hand and not be stressed out by other distractions. For the brain, it has been found that these silences are relaxing too.

Boost Creativity

Do you have a lot of work to complete that requires you to be creative? This is something that can be difficult to do when there are distractions and background noise. Therefore, you do not want to have the radio on or the television when you are trying to be creative. If you want to watch your favourite television series, you will have to use an Android TV recorder and watch it later. Studies have found that working in silence will boost your creative thought. You are going to be able to concentrate and explore your thoughts, whether you are designing something or analysing information.

Help Your Focus

There is no doubt that when you are sitting in a room that is silent, you are able to hear your thoughts clearly. This can allow you to focus when you need to. There are few distractions that are going to occupy your mind and you are going to be able to have all of the attention on the task you need to complete. Therefore, sit in a quiet room and you should be able to get your work done quicker. For a lot of people, some background noise is not a problem. But, there are some noises that are either too loud or distracting for concentration.

Better Understanding

When you have the ability to zone in and concentrate on a subject, this is going to lead to a better understanding of the topic. When there is noise in the background, this can affect your ability to understand what you are writing or reading. Yet, when you are in silence, your focus is going to be on the task and you can hear yourself think. Therefore, afterward, you are going to be able to recall the information better and be able to explain it well. This is due to having a better understanding at the time.

Do You Have to Work in Complete Silence?

It is important to remember that everyone is going to work differently. For example, you may agree and think that working in a silent room is best. But, you have probably heard of the popular phrase; the silence is deafening. For some people, working in silence is not enjoyable and they can operate better when there is background noise.

What you have to do is work out what the best environment is for you. For instance, if you are used to working in a noise office space or somewhere where there is always a radio on, you can be used to working in this type of environment. Making the transition to a silent space can be strange for you.

If there is nothing wrong with your concentration during the day and you are managing to get all of your work done, then there is no need to upset the status quo. Again, everyone is different and just because someone works in silence does not mean that you have to. But, if you do feel like your mind is wandering during the day or you cannot complete a task without becoming distracted then you need to rethink your workspace.
