Let’s start understanding the set of actions to be taken without any further delay.
Before starting, in case you don’t already have Adobe Reader, it’s available for free from get.adobe.com/reader and can be used with Windows, Mac, and Android operating systems.
There are three different ways to add text to the PDF. They are:-
- Using Adobe Reader DC
- Using Adobe Reader XI
- Using Preview on Mac
Method 1: Using Adobe Reader DC
Open a PDF document in Adobe Reader by clicking on the red Adobe Reader app having an A which is a stylized white icon.
- Press on File in the menu bar at the top of the screen
- Tap on Open to select the PDF document you want to type on
- Press on Tools placed on the upper-left corner of the window.
- Tap on Fill & Sign, a pencil icon in the upper-left part of the window.
- Tap on the “Ab” icon in the top-middle of the window.
- Press on the place in the document where you wish to add the text.
- Adjustment to the text size can be done by tapping on the small “A” to decrease the text size.
- Click on the larger “A” to enhance the text size.
- Press on “Type text here” in the dialog box.
- Tap the text you’d like to add to the PDF document.
- Press on the document outside the dialog box.
- Tap on File in the menu bar to press Save in the drop-down menu.
Text additions created by you are now saved in the PDF document.

Method 2 : Using Adobe Reader XI
Open a PDF document in Adobe Reader by clicking the red Adobe Reader app which is a stylized white A icon.
- Press the File in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- Tap on Open to select the PDF document you wish to type on to it.
- Tap on Fill & Sign in the upper-right corner of the window.
- Press on Add Text next to the T icon in the “Fill & Sign Tools” menu.
- Tap on the small triangle next to “Fill & Sign Tools” to expand the menu, in case you are unable to see the option.
- To add the text, tap on the place in the document where you wish to type or add the text. A dialog box will open with a cursor appearing where you pressed on the document.
- Select a font from the drop-down menu in the dialog box.
- Select a font size you wish to use in the box to the right of the font name.
- Tap on the “T” overlapped with a square to change the text color.
- Press on the document next to the blinking cursor.
- Write the text you would like to add to the PDF document.
- Tap on x in the upper-left corner of the dialog box.
- Saving the Document can be done by clicking on File in the menu bar and Save in the drop-down menu.
Text additions are now saved in the PDF document.
Method 3 : Using Preview on Mac
Open a PDF document in the Preview app by double-clicking on the blue Preview icon that looks like overlapping snapshots,
- Open by tapping on File in the menu bar for a drop-down menu to appear. Preview is Apple’s native image viewer app that’s automatically included with most versions of Mac OS.
- Tap on Tools in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- Press on Annotate in the middle of the drop-down menu.
- Tap on Text in the middle of the drop-down menu for a text box with the word “Text” to appear in the middle of the document.
- Press on and drag the text to position it where you wish it on the document.
- Tap on A on the right side of the toolbar just above the document for a dialog box to open.
- Tap on the font drop-down to change fonts.
- Press on the colored-rectangle to change the color of the text.
- Tap on the font-size to change the size of the text.
- Press on B to make the text bold, I to make the text italic, or U to underline the text.
- Buttons at the bottom of the dialog box will help to select an alignment for the text.
- Double tap on the word “Text” to add text to the PDF document.
- Tap on File in the menu bar and Save in the drop-down menu.
The text additions made by you are now saved in the PDF document.
