Twitter: Shifting away from Newsletters Spaces Communities

Twitter is drawing employees off working on major consumer-facing features like audio Spaces, communities, and newsletters and instead intends to refocus its efforts on user growth and personalization.

The changes arrive as a pending buyout by Elon Musk is already casting a shadow on every move the company makes and follows just weeks after Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal revealed a halt on most hiring and fired both the business’s consumer product chief Kayvon Beykpour and the leader on the revenue side, Bruce Falck.

Some of the restructurings are transpiring within Twitter under the direction of Jay Sullivan, the new head of product and interim director of revenue. Twitter says its priority is ‘on the areas that will have the greatest positive impact on the public conversation.’

A Twitter spokesperson said, “We are creating some updates to our consumer product team configuration and roadmap to better concentrate on the areas that will have the most significant positive impact on the public conversation,” without specifying where the modifications are.

When Beykpour spoke to us on the Decoder podcast last year, Twitter seemed lined up to take on businesses like Clubhouse, Patreon, and Substack. But, of course, at the time, it also had competition from other organizations like Facebook in those areas. But a year later, Meta’s newsletter numbers seem unimpressive, and it’s given up on an attempt to build several audio features.

The only Twitter feature noted specifically that’s still in the works is the edit button announced earlier this year. However, consistent with what Jane Manchun Wong uncovered about its tests, the report says it will allow edits within a specific period of the earliest post and include a tweet’s revision history.

Earlier today, Twitter announced an end date for the availability of TweetDeck for Mac, although it’s unknown whether that has any connection to this reshuffling. Two features where we’ve seen continued development that could register as having a “positive impact on the public conversation” include expanding tests of the Twitter Circles feature that brings a page from Instagram’s Close Friends playbook and its Birdwatch fact-checking setup.

How Twitter Works

Users determine what they desire to see on Twitter by tracking other users and companies and searching for topics. Generally, the timeline recollects the users’ preferences, but they may see retweets from individuals they follow and promote Tweets, which are paid advertisements.

Searching on Twitter: Users can rank a person, topic, or keyword to search in the search bar. There is also an #Explore process to search for keywords and trending topics. It decides what is trending based on an algorithm and users’ choices, locations, and interests. This algorithm also determines what is popular and highlights occurring discussions and topics.

Twitter formed the verified account symbol to support limiting fake accounts, suggesting the account is legitimate and belongs to the person or company. Twitter verifies the identity of the individual or company to get verified. It helps maintain trust with users. The account must be associated with a famous brand or person and track Twitter’s benchmarks using an official ID, website, or email address to be verified.

Following users: Members need to approve social connections on Facebook or LinkedIn. But that is not the issue with Twitter. Anyone can track anyone. After discovering a contact on Twitter, users can strike “Follow” on their profile page.

Broadcasting a tweet: While users post a tweet, the messages are broadcast on their profile and appear in followers’ feeds. These tweets can also be explored on it. It include news, random thoughts, jokes, and sharing articles; however, there is a restriction on length—originally, Twitter limited tweet characters to 140. The limit is now 280 characters, which contains spaces and punctuation.

Members can put hashtags to a keyword in their post to weave tweets into a discussion thread or link them to a general topic. The hashtag, which acts as a meta tag, is expressed as the #keyword. It makes the tweet searchable underneath that keyword. Twitter also suggests TweetDeck manage future scheduled tweets, multiple accounts, etc.

Interacting on Twitter: Users can select to retweet someone else’s post, which relays it to followers’ timelines. They can also remark on or reply to posts. Twitter Hazards: Because information circulates quickly on Twitter, there are risks. Some of these possess the following:

  • Spreading of fake news or disinformation. Information is posted in real-time, so it is challenging to stop or slow down the stretch when it comes to fake news. It pitched the Birdwatch program in 2021 to help limit tweets from circulating disinformation. Users should understand to spot disinformation and report these tweets if required.
