Trial Reduces Loneliness in Elderly

trial elderly loneliness

A pioneering talking therapy trial has appeared to reduce loneliness in older people during the pandemic. The trial saw trained support workers deliver talking therapy over the telephone, and the results suggest it was effective.

Combatting loneliness and depression

Those taking part in the survey were contacted on a weekly basis. They were encouraged to keep talking to friends and family members and follow a daily schedule of pleasant activities. The BASIL-C19 (Behavioural Activation in Social Isolation) was designed as part of a collaboration with older people who had been experiencing loneliness, isolation and depression since the pandemic got underway.,

Academics from the Universities of York, Leeds and Manchester worked on the survey alongside the charity AgeUK and the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) NHS Foundation Trust. The telephone-based intervention was designed to combat loneliness and depression. Older people taking part in the survey said the intervention helped them to maintain social contact and a sense of routine. The research team said mental health amongst those surveyed had improved during the study. A bigger follow-on trial is now being prepared and will see 600 older people participate. It’s said this will be the largest study to ever tackle depression and loneliness via these methods.
