Top 30 Online Universities of 2011

Wikipedia defines Online Degree as “An academic degree ( usually a college degree, but sometimes the term includes high school diplomas and non-degree certificate programs) that can be earned primarily or entirely through the use of an Internet-connected computer, rather than attending college in a traditional campus setting. Improvements in technology and the increasing use of the Internet worldwide have led to a proliferation of online colleges that award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees”.

Although the general perceptions towards on campus degree is more favorable in comparison to an online degree, it’s still very valuable for those with disabilities, full-time employees, soldiers, and stay at home parents among others.

Here we present to you a list of top ranked online universities so as to help you choose the one that suits you the most. The universities were ranked by weighting the following metrics:

  •  Average net price of attendance i.e. the normal tuition fees being the average of tuition fees and other charges,
  •  Acceptance rate; i.e. the percentage of applicants who got admitted,
  •  Student-to-faculty ratios,
  •  Percentage of students receiving grants or scholarship aid,
  •  Percentage of students receiving low cost federal student loans,
  •  Retention rates of full time students, which depicts the how satisfied the students are with the college
  •  Graduation rates, viz. Percentage of students getting the degree and
  •  Cohort default rates- Low default rates suggest that alumni are generally having a successful time repaying their student loans

To be included, universities need to offer a selection of 4-year bachelor degree programs online, be accredited and listed on the U.S. Department of Education College Navigator site.
