How to Take Care of Laptop or Computer

At the office, there are people designated to take care of laptops periodically. While at the office, laptops were mainly in a dust-free, safe environment, and home will not be the same. It may not be possible when you work from home. 

Working from home, shortly referred to as WFH, has become very common and will continue for many more months or years depending on the pandemic’s direction. However, not everyone is used to or casual with serving from home. For many employed professionals, this course of working from the house is unknown.

Serving from home may seem unusual for people employed in onsite work, hardware, or other services. But for software professionals, WFH transition is more accessible thanks to laptops, in which all of the work is done, executed, and delivered. Therefore, we must take comprehensive care of the laptops while operating from home for extended life and trouble-free operations.

Here are a few simple but essential tips and guidelines on how to take care of our laptops during work from home.

Keep the computer or laptop in a clean and dust-free place.

If you are lying near to windows or working it in places full of dirt, this may prevent the heat-escape-routes over some time and thereby increase your laptop heat quicker than usual and begin to many problems. Therefore, it is best to determine your workplace in a clean, dust-free room to circumvent problems.

Take Care of Laptop

Ensure that the keyboard is precise before closing the display monitor on top of it.

Please look for earphones, mobiles, pens, or pencils on the keyboard when closing the display, as this can damage the keys and the show. So ensure to clear all details before completely closing the display monitor and evade placing things on the keyboard.

Hold it by its keyboard base and not by the display.

If you hold and lift a laptop by the screen or display alone, the show or the small parts that connect the display to the base will be damaged quickly. The collection is also easily scratched or damaged by direct pressure. So please do not touch the display screen harder when closing the display monitor. It can get cracked.

Insert and withdraw cables smoothly so as not to destroy the ports.

Constantly look at the symbols on the laptop to identify the ports before inserting the pen drives, CD drives, and data cables so as not to damage the ports. Then, when all work is done, check the plugin charger, data cables, pen drive, etc., to see if they have been removed.

Never leave it in or near excessive heat and cold.

  1. Excessive cold or heat can cause harm to the laptop and its components.
  2. Please do not place your laptop in the trunk of your car when it is cold. If the laptop freezes, it can begin to data loss.
  3. To evade those problems, favor laptop bags or cases to defend your laptop from excessive heat or cold temperatures while traveling.
  4. Do not put the laptop on top or near the oven. Radiated heat can melt or damage parts of the computer.

Evade placing heavy materials, like books, on top of the laptop

Setting heavy objects like books on top of the computer can disable the LCD screen by ramming it against the keyboard. It would improve if you did not place a laptop adjacent to the appliances that create a strong magnetic field, like TV, big speakers, etc.

Use an old brush to sweep the exhaust fan and keys gap in the keyboard.

You can take an old brush to gently clean the dust or crumbs that have been collected in the gaps between the keyboard and the exhaust fan area.

Try to hold the laptop on a flat, clean surface. 

You put the laptop on an irregular surface like a pillow, bed, or on your lap for a running time, hindering the airflow and causing it to overheat. You might regard your laptop as heating up when you utilize it like this.

Place liquids and foods away from your laptop.

In case you drop the laptop.

  1. Initially, check the laptop if there is any visible damage.
  2. Then try to shift it on. If that doesn’t run, it’s probably permanently disabled.
  3. If it switches on, but there are heavy beeps, count beeps and use another device to search online for the relevant error code.
  4. If it switches on without any concern, look for any lines, marks, spots, patterns on display. If any of these developments are there, the display needs repairing.
  5. Review to see if it will switch on as expected without any freezes.
  6. If it turns on and loads as usual, quickly back up all your vital data and files, as the hard drive could abruptly crash at the following stage
  7. If the only loss is on the outside and your laptop is running, you can use it as usual. If laptop performance is affected, the computer needs to be repaired, or some parts may require replacement.

In case you spill liquid on the laptop.

  1. Unplug immediately if it is secured into the mains. Also, eliminate the battery straight away.
  2. Try to hold the laptop upside down to restrict the flow of liquid into the motherboard.
  3. If feasible, use a microfiber cloth or handkerchief to wipe it.
  4. In case of large spills, bend the laptop towards an air vent and shake it gently. Pushing the hard drive is also helpful but requires to be done carefully.
  5. After cleaning is done as recommended in earlier steps, put the laptop in a warm, dry area for 1-2 days.
  6. If it still doesn’t work correctly, it needs to be repaired or replaced.
