Marriages are always gala affairs irrespective of who you are. The chance to get everyone together, engage in some dance, music and festivities is high on almost everyone’s priority list. However, while marriage is synonymous with fun, laughter and celebration, what most people don’t realise until they get straight into the process, is the running about for paperwork and proper registration that needs to be done.
But here’s the good news. With the country moving into the digital age, online marriage registrations are now making everything easier. There’s no need to worry about the tedious registration process, because it can now happen online with just the right documents and the click of a few buttons.
Why the need for marriage registration?
Matches made in heaven is all good while uttering one’s vows but there still needs to be real proof that you are getting married and that means, proper paperwork should be in place. A marriage registration certificate signed by the Registrar gives you that validity. While most religions can register their marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, inter-religious marriages and certain other religions fall under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
A marriage registration is essential when trying to get a spouse visa to go abroad. At the same time, it helps to open a joint account, avail medical facilities under your spouse’s insurance and in many other small ways.
How does the
online process work?
Online marriage registration is not a complex process and can be done by anyone able to work a computer. The best part- it can be done from anywhere. Once you head to the website of your municipality, click on the ‘Registration of Marriage’ option. This will instantly take you to the online form that will need to be filled.
The marriage registration forms begins with complete details of the husband, with ID proof attached. The second part of the form deals with the wife’s details with the type of ID proof being submitted. The third section of the form contains details of the witness who will be witnessing the registration process. Lastly, fill in your delivery details and the process is done.
With the right documents at hand, this entire process can be done in a matter of minutes. All it takes is a little patience and all the right details. It doesn’t end just yet. You will also need to fill in the Certificate of Marriage. Here you will have to select the date of appointment and click submit.
Once you have obtained a date, save the acknowledgement slip and on the day of the appointment, visit the Registrar with all of your supporting documents. A small fee will have to be paid and the process will be done.
So if you want to save yourself the hassle of going to collect the required forms, filling them up, waiting for a date to be given and so on, all you need to do is log on to the website and do it from the comfort of your home. But always remember the sooner you make the appointment, the sooner your documents will be processed.
