MultiVersus counts Fortnite personalities LeBron James, Rick, and Morty

MultiVersus, Warner Bros. Games’ Super Smash Bros.-like fighting video game, is counting real-life NBA player LeBron James and Rick and Morty from the cartoon Rick and Morty to a crossover-laden roster.

But, of course, it isn’t the first time LeBron, Rick, and Morty have shown up in a big crossover game — they’ve also appeared in Fortnite.

LeBron James will be playable in MultiVersus beginning July 26, the same day the game will be available in open beta, and you can see him in action in his debut trailer. However, if you attend closely, you might be able to tell that LeBron doesn’t voice LeBron — instead, he’s played by John Bentley, who also voices Barrett Wallace in Final Fantasy VII Remake. In addition, Rick and Morty will be added sometime during the game’s first season.

The rest of the roster is packed, featuring WB characters like Bugs Bunny, Batman, Arya Stark, Wonder Woman, and the Iron Giant. You can see the whole lineup here. The game will be free to play and available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

MultiVersus is a forthcoming free-to-play crossover fighting game designed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game features diverse characters within the Warner Bros. Discovery catalog, with those from Warner Bros., HBO, Turner Entertainment, DC Comics, and Cartoon Network. The title is organized for release in 2022. Microsoft Windows is PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The open beta for the game is formed to be released on July 26, 2022, which was proved to serve as a soft launch. While an early key version was released one week prior, on July 19, for those that experienced the game’s closed playtests and/or contending in the upcoming 2v2 tournament in the 2022 Evolution Championship Series. The top 32 teams get a stake in the $100,000 prize pool via Twitch’s Drops reward system and/or purchasable founder packs.

The Founder Pack allocation for PC is done thru Steam.

MultiVersus is a podium fighter in which players battle on diverse stages and attempt to knock their competitors outside the boundaries of the arena, with characters being struck further the more damage they take. The game is mainly played in a 2-vs-2 format, though 1-vs-1 and free-for-all options are also available.

The game presently features 16 playable characters, 15 coming from ten Warner Bros. Discovery-owned franchises (with many of them being voiced by actors reproducing their roles from earlier media, except a few for other reasons, such as the Space Jam iteration of LeBron James), and one original character. Some characters also have variants with their voice actors, like Uncle Shagworthy and Cake being variants of Shaggy and Jake. New characters are expected to be notified before and after the game’s release.

A sum of eight characters will be open by default when the Open Beta begins on July 26, 2022: Harley Quinn, Jake the Dog, Taz, Shaggy Rogers, Superman, Garnet, Finn the Human, and Reindog. Of these eight, the first four were also public to those who could recreate the game during the Early Access preview period. Players would then be able to open all other characters revealed before launch, namely Arya Stark, The Iron Giant, Batman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Steven Universe, Velma Dinkley, and Tom & Jerry, through gameplay or by using Character Tokens incorporated within any of the three tiers of “Founder’s Pack” content packages.

The game is being created by Player First Games and is set to release in July 2022. Dedicated rollback netcode, servers, and voice acting have been promoted as prominent features, and the team intends to release new content and characters via constant updates. The game carried a closed alpha test from February 25 to March 8, 2022. An open beta for the competition will be released in July 2022.
