Research papers are daunting projects. Unlike other writing assignments you’ll do throughout high school and college, research papers require a deep understanding of the subject matter. Any misunderstanding of the subject matter, the assignment, or the sources you use to support your claims can impact your grade.
That being said, there are steps you can take to ensure that you receive an excellent grade on your finished product. If you feel you need assistance during this process, here are five tips on crafting the perfect research paper.
Develop a strong thesis statement
One major mistake that many students make when they begin their research paper is failing to develop a strong thesis statement. And it may not always be clear what exactly that is. A thesis statement is the conclusion you’re drawing based on your research, the statement that you’re proving to your reader, and the statement that each of your research-based points are designed to support.
Basically, the thesis statement is main theme of your paper. If you do not have a strong thesis statement, your entire paper is already poised to fall apart.
Create a solid outline
It’s extremely difficult to create a strong research paper when you’re improvising and squeezing in the evidence as you write your words. In order to create a product strong enough to receive your desired grade, you need to first create a strong outline. Your outline should consist of your thesis statement followed by each of your main points (supported by research) and your conclusion. Once you have developed a blueprint for your paper, you can begin to write in a way that works with your organized outline.
Present evidence in a concrete, fluid manner
Writing is an art, and when you are tasked with writing a research paper, you are expected to do so in a way that meets your teacher’s standards. This means that you need to fill your paper with concrete statements and facts, but you need to also make sure that your statements flow and support your thesis statement. If your paper is choppy or goes on a tangent which doesn’t focus solely on your argument, you aren’t going to receive the grade you want.
Cite your sources correctly
Another major mistake that students make is not citing their sources properly. Even if your research is spot on and your paper reads well, a failure to cite sources throughout your paper (and then properly list them at the end) will most likely result in markdowns which could have easily been prevented. Make sure that you know how to cite research sources and include them at the end of your work.
Have your work read by another person
After a long period of work, it can be difficult to read through your own paper without missing simple grammatical errors or misspellings. Even after a long period away from your work, you may continue to miss minor problems since you know exactly what you meant to say in your head (and that’s how you might read it). After you finish your paper, give it to another person to proofread. Because it is not their work, they are more likely to catch errors or find areas of improvement in your paper.
Quality writing is not a skill that everyone has, and it’s certainly not one that you can quickly sharpen before an important research paper. Despite the valuable tips above, you may find yourself in a situation where you’re not capable of writing a research paper that meets expectations. If you lack the skills necessary to complete your paper, consider reaching out to buy research paper from a professional company who will be able to craft the research paper that meets your needs.
