How Drinking Water Is Purified

People maintain their health not only with eating nutritious foods but by drinking optimal water as well. The cells in our body need water to properly do their job. With this, we have to make sure that the water we drink is safe. It should not contain any form of contaminants that could harm our bodies.

Water purification is the process by which chemicals and other impurities are removed from the water. Some of the impurities that could be removed with purification are the following:

  • Algae
  • Fungi
  • Pollutants
  • Bacteria
  • Metals like lead

Below are the major steps of water purification


In this process, water passes through a screen as it enters the filtration system. The main purpose of this is for protection – to keep large materials out of the system. Such materials could cause issues in the entire purification process if screening is not performed.

Most of the time, this procedure is done in a small separate facility.

Coagulation / Flocculation

The next step in water treatment is Flocculation. Here, chemicals are added to the water in order to treat it. This process will produce what is known as floc, which are sticky particles that attract the larger particles.  Basic chemistry is used here.  As the larger particles stick together they will either rise to the top or sink to the bottom.   When this happens it is easy to remove them from the water.    While the particles that are removed from the bottom with a conveyer, the particles at the top are skimmed off. 


A critical part of the process of producing purified drinking water is filtration. Water undergoes several filtration processes where different types of filters are used. These filters are often called porous media. And every time the water passes through a filter, different types of impurities is removed.

These filters are usually made up of sand, charcoal, and gravel. With modern technology the filtration process has become more efficient and effective. Thus, making sure that high quality Purified drinking water is produced.


The last of this purification process is the disinfection. The screened and filtered water will now be stored in a close tank where it will be disinfected with chemicals like chlorine. It is necessary to use chlorine in order to eliminate any bacteria or other microorganisms that might have passed the filtration process.

Aside from using chlorine, there are also other technologies that some companies use in order to effectively perform the disinfection.

Some of these are any of the following:

  • Ultrafiltration(the use of filters with pores of 0.2 microns or less)
  • Ultraviolet light (UV)
  • Reverse osmosis (RO)

So there you go. You now have an idea of how purified drinking water is produced. As discussed above, the purification process removes chemicals and dirt in tap water to make it safe for human consumption. Though there are places where tap water is safe to drink, there is still a chance that it could contain a few contaminants that can harm the body.
