Remove Grease Stain from T-shirt : Get it Perfectly Done

Remove grease stain from T-shirt … the first thing that comes to your mind is, it is a gone and hopeless case when you get one on your favorite polo t-shirt. But, wait it can be done in a very easy manner.

Don’t panic. There are a variety of common household products you can use to remove grease stain from T-shirt so it looks clean and new again. Your favorite shirt will be back in the game in no time!

Method 1 : Dish Detergent or Shampoo or Bar Soap

  • Cover the whole greased spot on t-shirt with liquid dish detergent. Although grease-removing detergents are helpful, but these are not necessary a full solution to your problem. You may use any hair shampoo for this purpose, as well, as these are designed for body oils, so should work effectively in removal of grease from the t-shirt ,too. Alternatively, you may use bar soap, it can be any hand or body bar soap, but ensure it hasn’t got any additives that slows down the cleaning process like Dove soap would not be suitable for this process. It is better to get bars labeled Laundry Soap for tough grease.
  • Get the spot dampened with water or ammonia for extra grease removal, then rub the bar over the stain until visibly sufficient soap has been applied to make a rich lather or foam. You may also grate the bar soap and apply powder over the stain after wetting for an extra ease of penetration.
  • While using colored detergent, ensure to dilute it otherwise it may stain the t-shirt.
  • Use an old toothbrush to help you penetrate the stain deeper for stubborn stains. It is better to use than doing it with your hand. Old foot brushes or nail brushes can also serve the purpose. There are small scrub brushes available in market for cleaning purposes.
  • Work foam from the soap or detergent or shampoo into the stain to see it dissolve. Dish washing gels, shampoos and laundry bar soaps have special reagents to fight grease.
  • Rinse the affected area with water first, then you may follow with a vinegar rinse which is optional. Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent which is used in a wide variety of applications. It reduces the alkalinity of soaps or detergents in order to make them less effective. Therefore never use detergents or soaps along with any vinegar.
  • If you really wish to use it then it is better to mix one part vinegar with two parts water. Soak the t-shirt in the mixture of water and vinegar, then rinse out the vinegar and after that use the detergent or shampoo or soap.
  • Wash the t-shirt alone, with laundry detergent. It is better to follow washing instructions on t-shirt label.
  • Allow the t-shirt to air-dry. Avoid dryer as drying in the extremely hot mechanical dryer may cause any residual oil or grease to set into other parts of the t-shirt.
  • Repeat the above steps as many times as you wish to remove grease stain from t-shirt, in case, the stain still persists.

Method 2 : Spot Remover and Hot Water

  • Use a spot remover to hit hard on any grease or oil stains. Spray the spot remover liberally over the affected area and scrub with help of a toothbrush.
  • Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Allow the spot remover to set while you boil water.
  • Remove the boiling water from the burner and carefully pour the water over the stains.
  • A small list of things to remember as you perform the above step:
    • Place the t-shirt in a tub or washbasin.
    • Never place the t-shirt on the floor. Otherwise, splattering of extremely hot water all over it may potentially hurt your feet.
    • Try to lift up the pot of water as high as possible.
  • The water must be really hot to help break the grease or oil linkage.
  • The water must forcefully hit the grease or oil stain. The higher the water when poured over the stain, the more forcefully it will penetrate as it hits the t-shirt.
  • Be careful! You’re using boiling hot water. Ensure aiming the water over the t-shirt placed securely inside the tub. Try to avoid splattering otherwise it might come back and harm you.
  • Repeat these steps for each area under grease or oil.
  • You must turn the t-shirt inside out and attack the stain with another round of spot remover and boiling water for better results.
  • Wash the t-shirt alone, with laundry detergent. Follow washing instructions on the t-shirt label.
  • Allow the t-shirt to air-dry. Avoid dryer as drying in the extremely hot mechanical dryer may cause any residual oil or grease to set into other parts of the t-shirt.

Method 3 : Baby Powder

  • Blot away any excess grease or oil with a paper towel. Try soak in g as much grease or oil as possible away from the t-shirt before moving on to the next step.
  • Put the baby powder over the grease or oil stain generously. You can use any generic baby powder whichever you may like. If you don’t have baby powder, try using absorbents like :
    • Cornstarch
    • Salt
  • Remove the baby powder from the t-shirt with a paper towel or spoon. Avoid any spillage over other parts of the t-shirt. Do this step carefully.
  • Work with a little amount of hand dish wash detergent and water into stain with thumb. Let detergent to foam up. Take an old toothbrush and rub the stain with circular motions.
  • Be sure to penetrate the stain from both sides of the fabric inside as well as outside the shirt.
  • Wash the t-shirt alone, with laundry detergent. Follow washing instructions on the t-shirt label.
  • Allow the t-shirt to air-dry. Avoid dryer as drying in the extremely hot mechanical dryer may cause any residual oil or grease to set into other parts of the t-shirt.

Method 4 : Lighter Washing Fluid

  • Spray a little WD-40 or lighter fluid onto the clothing instead of detegent. WD-40 is an effective agent in removing grease from surfaces and clothes, like some lighter fluids.
  • Perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area of your t-shirt before attacking the stain with the WD-40 or lighter fluid.
  • Let the WD-40 or lighter fluid set and penetrate deep into the t-shirt for 20 minutes.
  • Wash out the WD-40 or lighter fluid by thoroughly soaking the clothing in warm water.
  • Wash the t-shirt alone, with laundry detergent. Follow washing instructions on the t-shirt label.
  • Allow the t-shirt to air-dry. Avoid dryer as drying in the extremely hot mechanical dryer may cause any residual oil or grease to set into other parts of the t-shirt.
