How GST Works in India
GST (Goods and Services Tax) replaced multiple indirect taxes in India on July 1, 2017. It is a destination-based tax applied at every stage of the supply chain. For intra-state transactions (within the same state), GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the GST tax slabs in India?
India has four GST slabs: 5% (essential items like packaged food, transport), 12% (processed food, mobile phones), 18% (most services, electronics, software), and 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, cement). Some items like fresh food, healthcare, and education are GST-exempt (0%).
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
To extract GST from a GST-inclusive amount: Base Price = Total Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate). For example, if the total is ₹1,180 at 18% GST: Base = 1180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000. GST amount = ₹180.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) goes to the central government and SGST (State GST) goes to the state government — both apply on intra-state sales. IGST (Integrated GST) applies on inter-state sales and is collected by the central government, which then distributes the state's share.
Do freelancers need to charge GST?
Freelancers must register for GST and charge it on invoices if their annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for special category states). Service providers generally charge 18% GST. Below the threshold, GST registration is optional but can be beneficial for input tax credit claims.
