Blizzard withdraws World of Warcraft Mobile Game

Blizzard has withdrawn a World of Warcraft mobile game. The game, made in partnership with Blizzard’s Chinese publishing partner NetEase, lasted for three years before a conflict about financing spans halted the project.

The in-development mobile label was three years along before getting canned. Activision Blizzard faces a lawsuit and employee backlash over sexual harassment.

The World of Warcraft mobile play was codenamed “Neptune” and was suggested to be a mobile spinoff of the MMORPG.

The cancellation comes at an exciting time as Blizzard makes a concerted push into the mobile market, developing original games for the platform. First, the developer announced Warcraft Arclight Rumble in May, a “mobile action strategy game.” Then, in June, it released Diablo Immortal, whose dubious monetization model hasn’t hindered its popularity.

Blizzard and NetEase have been associates since 2008. The business co-developed Diablo Immortal, publishes Blizzard games like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone in China, and is an associate in Blizzard’s Overwatch League, holding the current world champion, the Shanghai Dragons.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is an enormously multiplayer online role-playing game released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Established in the Warcraft fantasy universe, World of Warcraft takes place inside the world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the previous game’s events in the series, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The game was broadcasted in 2001 and was released for the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise on November 23, 2004. However, the game can also be recreated solo without interacting with others. The game primarily concentrates on character progression, in which players gain experience points to level up their personality to make them more powerful and purchase and sell items using in-game currency to receive better equipment, among other game plans.

World of Warcraft was a significant critical and commercial hit upon its original release in 2004. It quickly became the most popular MMORPG of all time, reaching 12 million subscribers in 2010. In addition, the game had over one hundred million documented accounts by 2014. By 2017, it had grossed over $9.23 billion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing video game franchises.

Gaming journalists have cited the game as the greatest MMORPG of all time and one of the greatest video games. It has also been noted for its long lifespan, receiving developer support and expansion packages over 15 years since its initial release. In 2019, a vanilla interpretation of the game titled World of Warcraft Classic was launched, permitting players to participate in the base game before any of its expansions were found.

World of Warcraft introduced WoW Tokens

World of Warcraft introduced WoW Tokens through an update in April 2015 to be redeemed within 30 days of a World of Warcraft subscription.
