The Acceptable TDS levels

  • Our body needs minerals and salts for its healthy growth.
  • The standard acceptable TDS levels are as follows.
  • Below 300 – Considered to be excellent
  • In the range 300 to 600 – Good for human consumption
  • Above 600 but below 900 – Fair and acceptable
  • Between 900 and 1200 – Poor levels of TDS
  • Above 1200 – Unacceptable and unfit for drinking purposes

Note that these levels are purely indicative. In the ordinary course, you will find ground level as well as other water sources having TDS levels below 900.

Types of Water Purifiers

Membrane filters gravity-based water purifiers + UV + UF water purifier Eat Filters

These are the purest form of filters available in the market. In the olden days, people did not have access to much technology. They used simple white pieces of cloth to trap the dirt and suspended particles and obtain clear water.

These filters are used in areas where you expect the least water pollution like hilly areas near the sources of rivers. You get pure water directly from the rivers that flow past the regions, but there are chances of suspended organic and inorganic impurities. These wire meshes can help in eliminating impurities.

Water Purification Technology

We have seen four different types of water purifiers. Each of these water purifiers works on a specific technology. There is not much to explain the working of the membrane filters, faucet-mounted and gravity-based water filters. Let us concentrate on EAT filters and RO + UV + UF filtration processes.

Electro Adsorption Technology

EA technology involves a five-stage purification process. They are as follows.

  • External Pre-filter
  • Mechanical filter
  • Electro Adhesion Filter
  • Ion Exchange filter
  • Electro Adsorption
  • Reverse Osmosis

This process involves the passing of source water through a semipermeable membrane that traps chemical impurities like arsenic, mercury, lead, and pesticide residues. This membrane can take care of the bacteria, viruses, and various microorganisms.

You are also able to eliminate TDS up to 90% using this process. The RO water filters work on a five or 6-stage purification depending on the configuration of the water purifier.

The Sediment Filters

This is a voluntary arrangement. Usually, you have this filter fitted outside the RO machine. This filter takes care of suspended particles and more significant impurities. This filter enhances life of RO membrane as it eliminates the larger particles and does not allow them to enter the machine.

Pre-activated Carbon Filters

The pre-activated carbon filter removes organic and various volatile compounds from the water that usually give the water its bad odour.

Ultraviolet Protection

The pure water obtained through RO filtration contains traces of viruses and bacteria. As RO membrane cannot filter impurities out with molecular weight less than 20, it cannot eliminate monovalent ions like sodium, etc. Hence, this water now passes through the UV chamber where the ultraviolet radiation kills microorganisms and bacteria, thereby making the water 100% safe to drink.

Ultra Filtration

The resultant water passes through an Ultrafiltration membrane to remove traces of residual impurities. This filtration membrane contains minute pores that trap any contaminants that might have escaped elimination in the RO process.

The Mineralizer

The disadvantage of the TDS controller is that it releases a part of the input water into the RO purified water thereby providing an opportunity for contaminating the RO purified water. The mineralizer releases the appropriate minerals lost during the RO purification process alone. This replenishes the mineral content of the water and thus improves the quality of output water.

Which Water Purifier to buy?

After seeing the functions of different types of water filters, still the principal question remains unanswered. Which type of filter is best suited for your home? This depends on the quality of water you have as the water source.

TDS Level of Input water sourceIs the water muddyIs there a presence of biological impuritiesAn ideal choice of Water Purifier
Below 300 ppmNoNoGravity-based purifiers and faucet mounted water filters are the best suited for such water
Below 300 ppmNoYesThe Ultraviolet filtration is the best solution under such circumstances as it can eliminate the bacteria and other microorganisms
Below 300 ppmYesNoIn the absence of TDS and biological impurities, you can opt for a UF filter to take care of the minute soil impurities
Below 300 ppmYesYesThe best machines are the UV + UF or the EAT machines
Over 300 ppmNoNoAs the TDS levels are above 300 ppm, you should be using the RO water purifiers
Over 300 ppmNoYesThe ideal machines are the combination of RO and UV
Over 300 ppmYesNoThe RO + UF combination should work fine because of the absence of biological impurities. To be safe, you can also opt for the RO + UV + UF water filters
Over 300 ppmYesYesInvariably, you should look for RO + UV + UF water purifiers.

Factors to consider while buying Water Purifiers

  • Do the TDS evaluation test to determine the amount of TDS in water.
  • If you live in an area inhabited by industries, it is better to conduct a chemical test of the water source to determine the level of industrial pollutants.
  • If in doubt, you can always go for the best, i.e. the RO + UV + UF water filters. However, remember these filters are comparatively expensive as compared to the other water filters.
  • Your budget plays a huge role in deciding the kind of water purifier you choose. While determining the budget, you should also factor the cost of maintenance and replacement of filters.

Understand drawbacks of the RO Water Purifiers

they waste a lot of water. They waste more than 50% of the input water. In this era of water shortage, this is criminal wastage.
The best alternatives are the EAT filters. However, you will not be able to use the EAT filters when the TDS value of the input water is less than 500 ppm.

Final Words – Wrapping it up

This buying guide should do purchasing favourite water purifier easy. We have touched upon all the aspects of water pollution and nature of water filtration technologies available in the market today.
