How to put on makeup and it does not look overdone is a skill which can be mastered as you do it regularly.
If you are new to this and have never applied makeup, then various products and tools will be quite intimidating for you. But don’t worry. We will take you through it step-wise journey of the makeup basics.
Once you perfect the art of how to put on makeup, it will feel like a breeze.
Preparing Your Face
Remove any old makeup.
While applying makeup, it is essential to initialize with an exact palette. Remove all the previous makeup that you might have stayed with or slept in, and clear off makeup from last application in the day. Try applying makeup over the old makeup leaving what is called touch-ups, your face look will look all caked on. It will be unnatural than a fresh makeup which is put on freshly on your face. You are required to cleanse makeup residue to keep the skin unclogged and irritated free. You must apply a good makeup remover… a mild baby oil will also work…. to get rid of residues. Keeping in mind, you must remove the makeup at the end of the day. You must understand that sleeping with makeup on can give you clogged pores to cause blemishes, acne and wrinkles.
Wash the face and moisturizer it.
The same reason applies to wash your face. It would be best if you used a mild facial cleanser to cleanse the face gently. You must at least spend one minute for massaging and removing dead skin cells in pores before rinsing with cold running water. After washing, apply a facial moisturizerno need to check your skin type.
Prime your face.
The worth of a face primer is to increase the looks and feel of makeup and enhance longevity. Apply the primer with your fingers and covering the whole face with little amount. The primer helps makeup to stay all day. Primer is essential for you in case of sweaty weather, run, or anything that causes makeup to wear off or smear.
Put on a coat of foundation.
There are various types of foundation available, but all are generally applied in the same way. Foundations, be it liquid, cream, or powder, create even complexion and an even base for the makeup. Try to use a foundation brush or damp beauty sponge to apply foundation to face. Blend it into your neck and earlobes if necessary. Your foundation shade should be the same colour as your natural skin tone. Although one toner lighter will also do. Try to match your foundation to your chest and neck so that your face does not look different as compared to the rest of your body. You never wish to have a harsh line from jawline to neck with the un-blended finish, which is not what you want to. Choosing a colour that matches the skin tone always helps. You must use a concealer brush for the little extra foundation to cover up stubborn blemishes. Liquid foundation, when applied with your fingertips, is more likely to induce bacteria to the skin and may cause future breakouts.
Apply the concealer.
The aim of concealer is to smoothen out uneven skin tone as a result of blemishes or dark under-eye circles. You can also use a concealer in the shade slightly lighter in the skin tone to lighten dark areas or high points of the face. Try to use a concealer brush or you may use a clean fingertips to blend concealer on your undereye site in an upside-down triangle shape, down the bridge of your nose, chin, the temple or the forehead, and above the upper lip. You may try to use a shade matching the skin tone to cover any redness or for any acne or dark undr eye spots. Ensure to blend the edges of the concealer, so it seamlessly blends into your foundation.
Set the foundation and concealer.
This step is optional. It is better to use a damp beauty sponge to pick up loose powder and dab it into the under-eye area, then get it gently swept off any excess with a brush. Use a broad, fluffy brush to cover the whole face in a matching translucent or baby powder. This step towards the make regime is particularly useful while liquid foundation. It will provide to set the foundation and remove shine or tackiness.
Apply a highlighter.
With foundation application step completing, it is likely that the face now looks contour-less and flat because of the uniform colour. To offer some depth, you’ll be required to create the illusion of highlights and shadows. You can use a cream to be applied before you set the face or powder highlighter to brighten up the most profound areas of your face. The inside corners of the eyes, underneath the eyebrows, in the centre of the cupid’s bow, and on the tops/sides of the cheekbones. This will make the face look more bright and awake than it would otherwise. Make a ‘3’ shape on the cheekbones, into the eyebrows, and up to the forehead for the perfect highlight. You can use two fingers or a small highlighter brush to apply the highlighter.
Add depth with contouring.
The opposite to bringing out the highlights to your face, contouring is done to add depth by applying a powder that is a few shades darker than your actual skin tone, but it is not a bronzer, to the face where you wish to look minimized or diminished. Usually, it would be best if you contoured under the cheekbones, on the hollows of the cheeks, on the slants of the nose, and under the jawline. You make a broad forehead appear smaller by applying contour near the hairline and forehead. This will create a face look thinner and more prolonged in appearance. It offers the shadows that naturally occur without foundation. After contouring the front, you can now use bronzer to add colour to the face. Use a big bronzing brush. Try to buff out the bronzer right over where you have contoured.
Apply a little blush.
The final step in prepping the face is to add blush to the cheeks. The cheeks must have a bit of colour, but the colour may be variable for each user. Apply the blush with a broad brush on the apples of your cheeks which is the round part that forms while you smile. Please don’t go too heavy on the blush, add a dash of it which will be enough to replenish the colour that would come naturally.
Adding Your Eye Makeup
Fill in your eyebrows.
The step is optional and depends on the fullness of the eyebrows but is usuually recommended for those who have thin/sparse eyebrows. Select the colour of brow pencil, powder, or pomade that is close to your natural hair colour. Have the edges of your eyebrows outlined with small dashing motions to mimic hair, and then fill in the centre using the same short strokes. Move-in the same direction of the hair growth, and finish it with a clear or tinted brow gel for all-day stay.
Apply an eyeshadow primer.
It is an optional product for applying as a makeup enhancer. Eyeshadow primer helps the eyeshadow to stay on for a much more extended period. If you go without it, then you might find that eyeshadow fades, turns oily and crumble in the creases of eyelids after some hours. Using fingertip, dab on eyeshadow primer and start blending it from the roots of the eyelashes to the top of the eye crease. Finish it with a powder to make a perfect eyeshadow.
Put on the eyeshadow.
Although there are several ways of application of eyeshadow, yet the most classic technique is to apply a single colour entirely over the eyelid. You are using an eyeshadow brush or finger for higher pigmentation to apply it to the eyelid, starting from the centre near the lash line and blending outwards. Fade the eyeshadow into the natural skin tone near the eye crease, inside and outside corners of your eyes. Prevent any harsh lines from forming. To get a more dramatic look, apply a second darker matte colour of eyeshadow in ‘C’ shape taking it from the outside corner of the lash line up to the top to outer ? of the eyelid crease. Set it by using a light shimmer colour sweeping from the inner corner till the ending in the middle, then blending it with the rest of the eyelid. Your primary shade of eyeshadow should never go all the way to the whole of the eyebrow. You may take a chance to highlight the browbone by applying any contrasting lighter shade of eyeshadow. Ensure using natural colours like cream, sand, or white for pale skin. Or you may alternatively try a nude shade slightly more delicate than the skin tone. It doesn’t have to be matte, but sparkles must be subtle.
Apply the eyeliner.
The purpose of eyeliner is to offer an illusion of a fuller lash line, so try to choose a colour which is similar to the natural hair colour or brown in case you have blond hair, to match the lashes. You may do a smudgy look. For this, use an eyeliner pencil or to do an exact smooth look by using cream or liquid eyeliner. You may enhance the effect of illusion with the dashed or dotted line across the lash line, and try to connect the dots to create a full and continuous line. You may choose to wing the end up and outwards a bit. You may require to follow the lash line from the inside corner to the outside corner. Adding eyeliner to the bottom lash line must be done sparingly because it creates a notably much darker/bolder look and appears a bit strong and more unnatural than eyeliner on the top lash line only. When you feel comfortable with a natural eyeliner, you may start to try tight-lining the eyes by applying the eyeliner on the waterline of the eyelid.
Finish off with mascara.
To finish off the eye makeup, top off the eyes with a dash of mascara. There are various mascaras to choose from. You have a wide range depending on the look you want, if you have short lashes, use a mascara that adds length to the lashes, or if you have thin lashes, you must opt for a volumizing mascara. Dip the brush in the mascara once. Using the edge of the container or a paper towel, lightly wipe off the extra. Apply mascara to the top lash with upward strokes while looking straight forward. Try to initiate with the inner part of the eye and work the way outward. Complete the process on both eyes with two coats, then let it dry. Apply mascara to the bottom eye lashes if you wish to. Wiggle the brush a little with a sturdy hand as you use it. It helps in coating between the lashes not just the under layer. Never pump mascara brush in and out of the mascara to make air pockets. Never apply more than two coats of mascara. It will give a cakey thick look that is much less natural and will take away the natural darkening look. You may apply a coat of baby powder between coats of mascara to add a bit of length and volume to the lashes.
Adding Color to the Lips
Smooth out the lips.
Apply lip balm, primer, or sealer to help make all lip products applied last longer and much more vibrant. Additionally, they make the lips look prefer soft. Adding a good lip balm or primer prevents the lips from flaking during the day.
Apply lip liner.
Mark the outer edge of the lips with a liner that matches your lip colour or the colour you are going to apply. Sharpen the lip liner, and mark around the natural line of the lips. With the lips outlined, use the pencil to continue filling in the lips. It works to even out the colour and texture of the lips, making it easier to apply a gloss or lipstick later. Apply the lipstick or lip gloss with a brush or straight from the tube. Take a lipstick or lip gloss of your choice to go over the lip liner. If considering to have a natural look, you must stick with a nude shade, and for a more bold appearance, you may choose to apply a bright hue. The rule should be to start from the centre of the lip, and blending the colour outwards. Ensure to use the colour, close to the edges of the lips as you can without overdoing it and going outside the lip line. Stick the index finger straight into the mouth and pull it out quickly. Any excess colour will stick to the finger. Avoid being transferred to the teeth later on. Lipstick will amplify the look of the whole face. Choose a fun colour and try to wear only lipstick for simple and easy makeup look. It will effortlessly you put in more effort than you did.
Finish off your look.
With the completion of the lips makeup, the look is all ready to sparkle! Try to give a once-over to make to ensure there aren’t any streaks or loose eyeshadow that is required to be removed with a fluffy brush. You may dust off the extra powder near your eye corners and use a flexible blusher brush to correct any smudges near the jawline. If you have made any mistakes, use a q-tip dipped in makeup remover to rectify them. After applying, the makeup you wish to have, one should give a finish to the face with a setting spray. It is just a minute job, hold the bottle 812 inches away from the face and spray 4-5 times on the whole face. Now the makeup will stay on longer than ever and make your appearance look radiant all day long!
