SEO 101 : Back to Basics

Rank higher, faster, and receive more conversions in just 30 seconds

Many of you reading this post may consider yourself “SEO Professionals”. You may operate your own website, work for a dot.com company, or participate in the underworld of affiliate networks and “other” business ventures.

In fact, many of you may attend conferences, luncheons, and webinars hosted by “experts” who claim they can “increase traffic” and “enhance your ROI”. However, If I have learned one thing after years of practicing SEO, it is that webmasters and internet marketers often forget to implement the basics, and the basics are really the only “proven” method of getting the results you desire.

I cannot tell you the number of times that I have worked on a site where the webmaster had paid big bucks for analytic tools, only to find out that he has neglected the very basic of SEO practices. I purpose, that if we are to receive the rankings, traffic, and conversions we desire, we must first master the fundamentals of SEO.

What are the fundamentals of SEO?

Simply put, the fundamentals of SEO are all the little things that we should be doing every day.

This includes:

  • Using H1, H2, and H3 tags
  • By placing H1, H2, and H3 tags within web copy, we can help search engine crawlers locate keywords and phrases in which we want to rank.

  • Bolding Keywords
  • If we want to rank for a specific keyword, we will want to use that keyword within the body of my web copy. Similar to H1’s, bolding the keyword within the body text will help the SE crawler locate words and phrases that are relevant to our webpage.

  • Structuring URLS
  • As everyone knows, the URL is a sneak peek into the rest of the webpage. It may be easier for a webmaster to use a series of numbers and codes to organize the pages on their site, but you must resist this urge at all costs. Instead, make your URL’s keyword rich. This will help the search engines connect your page with your desired keywords.

  • Linking to relevant content within your site
  • There is a whole host of theories that deal with internal site linking. For our purposes, what you should take away is that internal linking brings results. Simply place keyword rich Anchor Text in your copy with a link pointing back to a relevant page within your site. This will help build up your site authority, and allow for deep pages to become indexed.

Whether you are a webmaster or an internet marketer, implementing the basics of SEO best practices into your overall SEO strategy will go a long way into achieving the results that you desire.

  16. These points are indeed important but in regards to WordPress, sometimes due to the faulty theme unwillingly the website suffers, because it uses heading tags in some irrelevant places. I recommend buying a premium theme and then concentrating on the points mentioned in the post, one can do well in SEO.
