Our Republic turned 60 today, and like every 60 year old has had more than its share of acme and troughs.
Republic day is just another holiday for most of us; with some flag-hoisting functions in school and in our neighborhood. Well, some of us bunk schools as I had done it too in my school days, anyways there was no teacher for taking attendance. For some others, it was stimulating to watch every state try to exceed others with floats full of color which made their way down to Rajpath. Even don’t forget the touchy moment when children who won Bravery awards astride their elephants and also lot of awards announced for military and civilians.

But for me other than patriotism, Republic day brings back the sweet and never ending memories of my school days. I hardly understand what this day meant for but there was an excitement as I was the member of scout & guides team who roll out of the classes after the lunch interval for the practice of Republic Day march past. As this was the only way to bunk classes in our school and be a part of the most honored parade that any class 5th student think of. After lots of class bunks or rather say with lots of practices, I was selected in the final team to take part in the parade.
Everything went well and that was my first Republic Day parade. That pride and joy which I attained marching past in front of other spectating class mates was out of this world. Oops, not to forget “Ladu” and “Candies” , I always fight to get more from teachers and class-fellows. After getting handful of candies, I immediately take my bicycle and come to my home to join my parents watching Republic Day parade.
But as you know, time changed things so it was totally changed in my college days, rather than fully packed days of practices of Republic Day parade, it was simple holiday for me . In first year of my college, I attended flag hoisting ceremony between principal, few teachers and handful of students and you don’t believe me guys I was viciously teased by my friends because for them it was just waste of time. And I tried to sync with them too, I still remembered that I watched “Khaki” on 26thJanuary,2004 with my friends. My republic days passed with surfing internet all the time, watching movies and rest of the time on my bed.
Now I am starting to miss those boring classes, Ladu and candies very badly. Will I ever get a chance to march for Republic Day parade or wear that scout shirt again. May be these are some small changes from my school to till date. But for a person like me, these are not small affairs. I am missing my school days badly.
But this Republic Day, I am taking pledge that will at least pay tribute to those warriors who have laid down their lives for our protection from the snowy hills of Kargil to deserts of Rajasthan.

Yogesh, I agree that the significance of holidays like this pass with time. I don’t want to date myself, but I even remember that when I was a school girl we celebrated May Day. It wasn’t really a holiday, it was just an announcement of spring. We would put on pretty dresses and ribbons in our hair and dance around the school yard. Now, I never hear anyone talk about May Day and I don’t even think girls wear dresses to school anymore unless it’s a school uniform. lol.
I have one question, what is Ladu? I’ll bet it’s something edible?
Thanks for sharing these memories.
