Microsoft Unveiled Platform Preview Of Internet Explorer 9 To Web Developers

Yesterday, Microsoft unveiled the  Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview at ietestdrive.com to the public. I don’t say to public as this release is only to show their new browser Internet Explorer9 to the Web Developers who can provide feedback to the Microsoft IE9 team. Microsoft team says that they are committed to update IE9 platform to keep a more effective way for discussion. Every update will take place in nearly 8 weeks.

“The Platform Preview, and the feedback loop it is part of, marks a major change from previous IE releases,” said Dean Hachamovich, the browser team’s general manager, in a statement issued yesterday before he took the stage at MIX10, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, to publicly launch IE9.

As this is a very early look to the new web browser so you don’t expect much user interface. There are no general features like toolbaar, build-in security, addreess bar. As said earlier, the preview is only meant to show to the Web Developers.

IE9 also includes the support of HTML5, CSS3, and SVG2. The addition of HTML5 helps users to allow direct audio and video streaming without a plugin. These new integration also brings the feature of more offline supports and multimedia supports without the need of plugins like Adobe Flash. Well, slow adaption of these features is still a worry for Microsoft as Firefox, Chrome and Safari already implemented these features.

The platform preview brings the new JavaScript engine, nicknamed “Chakra”.  It claims the title of the first multi-core aware JavaScript renderer and can use one core to render just the web scripts while the rest of the system can devote its attention to the main page.

Microsoft also states that IE9 will not work in Windows XP including this developer preview and you need atleast Windows Vista SP2 to download it. Microsoft also not cleared whether they launch the full version of IE9 this year or in next year.

Some keyboard shortcuts to work in platform preview :

  1. Ctrl + O : Open a webpage
  2. F5 : Refresh
  3. F10 : Home
  4. F12 : Developer Toolbar
  5. Alt + 5 : Force IE5 rendering mode
  6. Alt + 7 : Force IE7 rendering mode
  7. Alt + 8 : Force IE8 rendering mode
  8. Alt + 9 : Force IE9 rendering mode
  9. Alt + 0 : Reset Document Mode to the page default
  10. Ctrl +/- : zoom in and out
  11. Alt + ? : Help
  12. Ctrl + S: Save Webpage As…
  13. Alt + /: About

But I think the bigger question to ask is that whether Web Development community would react to the Microsoft new platform preview of IE9. Will Microsoft IE9 team can succeeded this time to fascinate the web developers to engage with this new browser?

What do you think is there enough spark to attract web developers, do share your views with us in the comment section below.

  11. I’m disappointed that they are shutting out Windows XP. Windows 7 is great, but XP is still a little bit faster in some areas.

The HTML5 support should be pretty cool.

  12. What happened to Microsoft? They used to be on top, now they are always playing catch up. With web browsers anyway. I like Internet Explorer, so I hope this new version does well.

  14. Funny how last time, IE 6 to 7 took a long time, but now it is very fast the way Microsoft is upgrading IE. They finally realized they are losing market share to Firefox.

  21. I’ve already checked out the platform preview a couple of times now and it looks great so far. I mean, they did some HTML5 tests with IE9 the other day and it seems that IE9 is THE browser who got the best results so far!

Isn’t that great? With that kind of support, everybody will be coding in HTML5 in no-time!
