FlowBreeze: Create Flowcharts in Excel

Flowcharts are an easy way to plan an application in a step-by-step manner. As a developer, you can use them for such tasks as outlining the user workflow or documenting the steps of an algorithm.

Although it’s possible to manually create flowcharts using the drawing tools that Office provides, I would recommend a much more comfortable solution: FlowBreeze, an add-in for automating the flowcharting process in Excel. All you have to do is type into a cell, press Enter, and FlowBreeze will replace your text with a flowchart symbol and connect it to the previous step. Based on what you type, the tool automatically chooses the right symbol. If you end your text with a question mark, it generates a decision symbol. If your text contains the keyword “read,” a data symbol will be added to the sheet.

FlowBreeze works with any Excel version, starting with Excel 2000, and is priced at $59.95 for a single-user license. A 30-day trial version can be downloaded from the product’s website.

PowerMockup: Design User Interfaces with PowerPoint

Many applications have poor user interfaces because too little effort is put into understanding what users really want and how the interface should help them to accomplish their tasks. Creating wireframes is an effective method for quickly prototyping and evaluating different interface approaches without doing any coding. Wireframes are simple grayscale sketches that illustrate the basic structure of a website or application. You can think of them as blueprints that specify the building blocks of a user interface.

One way to create wireframes on screen is to use PowerPoint together with an add-in called PowerMockup. PowerMockup provides a “Stencil Library” with several hundred wireframe shapes that can easily be dragged onto a PowerPoint slide. The add-in also includes a handy search feature and lets you add your own custom stencils to the library.

PowerMockup can be used with PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 and costs $39.95 for a single-user license. The trial version available on the PowerMockup website is fully functional but restricts access to a limited number of stencils.

Office Timeline: Visualize Project Schedules in PowerPoint

At some point in a development project, even when you are in an agile environment, you will have to plan and schedule your activities. You may have to provide estimates for the delivery milestones or create a detailed resource plan for the next iteration.

In such situations, it is useful to have a software tool that assists you in making the schedule. Office Timeline, an add-in for creating great looking timelines in PowerPoint, is one such tool. After installing Office Timeline, you simply launch the “New Timeline” wizard, choose a style for your timeline (Standard, Gantt, Phases, Intervals), enter your milestones and intervals, and click “Finish.” The add-in then automatically generates the timeline based on native PowerPoint shapes.

Office Timeline requires PowerPoint 2007 or 2010 to be installed and is available either as a free version or as an extended “Plus” edition, priced at $9.99 per license.

Chrome

1. Stop Load – Web pages that have lots of adverts, images and social elements often takes more time to load. This extension is helpful in such cases, as this allows you to  stop all of them after a set time. You just have to set the number of seconds you are willing to wait.

2. WebView – This add-on lets you collect images, text and other web content without bookmarking the whole page. The transparent clippings are stored on a separate tab, and refresh automatically when your selections are updated. Use scissors icon on the toolbar to clip content.

3. Video Resizer for YT – This chrome add-on lets you zoom in on a clip. YouTube offers three video player sizes: standard, medium and large. Using this extension you can easily make the window as large or as small as you want.

4. TabMemFree – This is a useful add-on which reduces memory waste by forwarding all the inactive tabs to an empty page to stop them. Click on the tab to return to the original page.

5. Collusion – This add-on lets you visualise the sites which are following you around the web. It keeps track of third party cookies. This tool creates a diagram that shows which sites are following you.

6. My Weekly Browsing Schedule – As its name suggest it lets you set your every week browsing schedule. It could be useful for tasks such as paying bills, checking lottery numbers or ordering groceries, etc.

7. Image Resizer/Scalar - This tool is helpful in those situations when you are not able to view content of a small image on a website. Simply click on the image and drag it  outwards to make it large, or inwards to reduce its size.
