7 Awesome Features Coming Up in WordPress 3.0

WordPress 3.0 is coming this May and I am very excited about the features its having with it. Now I can Proudly say WordPress has crossed the normal blog conception and its a fully featured CMS having tons & tons of functionality.

Here is the list of 7 best features you will see in WordPress 3.0

1. WordPress MU integration : MU or Multiple User functionality means you can now start a blog network of your own in a split second. You just need few clicks and you can provide a blog to your reader with your domain name.

For example – blog1.savedelete.com, blog2.savedelete.com and so on. User registering can create a sub-domain or sub-directory (depending on your host capabilities)

2. No more Default ADMIN user : When you install a fresh WordPress installation, you will be asked username and password. Before WordPress only provide you default user admin and a random password. This means you will have more security with this login type.

3. New Default theme : The age old Kubrik theme is gone and here comes the new default theme Twenty Ten. I really loved Kubrick as well but I think with time one needs to change the look.

4. Custom Post types : This is one of the most exciting feature which we are going to see. For simplifying I should say it will bring the real power of WordPress as a CMS.

Following part is taken from Kovshenin. Who has really explained the custom post types fantastically.

So what else could be done with WordPress’ Custom Post Types? Well, basically anything. Say you run an online store which of course has some static Pages (such as Contact, About, etc), some blog Posts, cause we’re so 2.0, remember? And Products, which would be a custom post type that contains the product name, description, product price, stock availability, and could even contain inquiries in forms of user comments!

One more example – a Real Estate Agency, same story – Pages, Blog Posts, News stories, property For Sale, property For Rent, Land for sale. The last three would contain extra taxonomy in forms of Country, Region. Custom fields such as price, total area, etc. The Edit Property page could even contain a Google Map where you could point out its location! Here’s a screenshot:

5. Navigational Menus : Now that’s really cool, it allows you to create different menu items containing Categories, Pages, External or Internal Link. It also support a widget so that you can place these menus in your sidebar as widgets.

6. Author Templates : Every author can have a differently designed page with integrations of author based templates.

7. Welcome Guide : Last but not the least, the installation will have a Guide (walk through) with all basic help and support.

That’s it .. may be some of you have also gone through nightly build version and saw some more great features. Let us know what do you think WordPress is lacking or having, we would love to hear it from you.

Great, glad it’s finally providing some actual CMS features. Still seems eons beyond true CMS systems, but simple and flexible is always nice.

  6. Nice post. I’m liking the MU integration.

Also, how do you get other people’s tweets to show up as a comment on your posts? And how does WordPress know a tweet has been sent given that most people use a tinyurl or something else which disguises the URL (or does it post retweets as comments?)

This is looking great. I suppose with custom post types, small businesses will be able to put this feature to immediate use.

Thanks for the heads up. I am about to setup another wordpress site for a client. I might wait a little while and install when the new version is released.

  10. My whole thing though is that I wish they would remove the wp-content and wp-admin folders. Make them dynamically generated so you don’t have to worry about the hackers trying to pick them apart. When I was installing WordPress to have a blog about the upcoming changes to The Easy API – http://theeasyapi.com – I was floored at the security changes that I had to do. I ended up not posting the blog yet because I wanted to wait a few months for 3.0 to come out. I run a service that connects multiple API’s together with one easy to use API call. It allows faster development for programmers as we don’t need to implement this functionality and that to connect and receive data. Just one easy call and you get well formed XML in return.

My main wish is that security would be tighter and it’s a good start to have a username and password defined by the installer. Great thinking on that! Maybe mix that in with a user defined admin folder and content folder and we’ll really be in heaven.

  11. I can’t wait. I use WordPress and am excited for the new features. Thanks for the info!

  16. The only thing I care about is the WordPress MU integration. WPMU as it is right now is a pain to set up and I wouldn’t want to do it more than once. WP 3 is supposed to make it a lot easier.

  18. I think these are awesome wordpress new features. Although I think those are pretty minor ones and won’t be affecting me very much.

  19. New default theme and custom post types are a refreshing change…other things just seem to be minor improvements..not so happy with MU integreation…looks like wordpress is following Drupal in many things here.

Very exciting. I’ve also heard that wp3.0 will support multiple wordpress installs.

MU sounds amazing for k-12 students. Now, a teacher can easily set up a blog/website for each student with wp.
