7 Awesome Features Coming In Apple iPhone OS 4.0

Before yesterday’s Apple live event, everyone was thinking what will be coming new in iPhone OS 4.0. Will this time iPhone support multi-tasking or will there be some interface changes? Will some other applications support for new OS?

It’s been 10 months when Apple released iPhone OS 3 and that was the first time they brought MMS, Copy/Paste and few others functionalities but was lacking with multi-tasking, i-books, folders etc. features.

So, yesterday Apple officially unveiled its highly anticipated iPhone OS 4.0. iPhone OS 4.0 will now have 100 of new features but seven are the most talked about that the company is calling “tentpole/seven pillars” features which are of highly importance.

The new OS will come in June , and a developer preview is available from today, so now we can expect to have lots of apps for the iPhone. And there’s much awaited multi-tasking, a new interface, huge mail update are coming in this summer.

So, let’s discuss the seven-pillars features of iPhone OS 4.0 which are going to be rolled out in these summers.

1) Multitasking : Steve Jobs said at the event, “we weren’t first to the party, but we’re gonna be the best.” Finally, Multitasking is coming to the iPhone and it’s been handle by a simple task switcher which I think doesn’t hinder battery life of iPhone. This feature is really simple, you have to double-click your home button and you will see all a list of running apps. Just select the application you want to work in, and you are done. There are seven services which come under Multitasking :

  • Background Audio : Allows you to run music apps like Pandora in the background. The Pandora app will also be integrated into the playback controls on the iPhone’s lock screen
  • Voice over IP (VoIP): Lets apps like Skype receive calls even while your iPhone is locked.
  • Background location: Gives turn-by-turn navigation apps like TomTom the ability to know your location when you’re not in the app and gives location-based services like Loopt the ability to track your location using cell tower-based positioning.
  • Push Notifications : Receive alerts from your remote servers even when your app isn’t running.
  • Local Notifications : Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required.
  • Task completion: Allows apps to continue working when you navigate away.
  • Fast app switching: Allows apps to instantly store state data and use no resources when you navigate away.

2) Folders : Many of the iPhone users were complaining about the lack of features available in File stacking system. So, yesterday company said ” Folders help users better organize and quickly access their apps. Simply drag one app icon onto another, and a new folder is automatically created. The folder is automatically given a name based on the App Store category of that app, such as “Games,” which the user can easily rename. Using folders, users can now organize and access over 2,000 apps on their iPhone.”
It means now you can sort your favorite apps into folders according to their functionalities.

3) Totally new Mail features: A new better Mail services is arrived in iPhone OS 4.o with unified inboxes, multiple exchange accounts, fast inbox switching, threaded messages. This is surely one of the best feature as mail app was not changed since 2007 and even apple don’t allow third-party mail application. Also Mail can open attachments within the mail and the attachment file will open in suitable application. Apple’s pitch on New mail service :

“iPhone OS 4 delivers the best mail experience on a mobile phone with its new Unified Inbox, allowing users to see messages from all their email accounts displayed together in a single inbox. With just a few taps, users can quickly switch between inboxes to see messages from any single account.”

4) iBooks : Steve Jobs announced that iBooks, the E-reader store application that was launched alongside with iPad, will also be rolled out in iPhone. The interface and store will be the same as it will be on iPad. It means, you will be able to purchase a book thorugh your iPhone and take it with you wherever you go. And, as a bonus, iPhone users will also get a free copy of Winnie The Pooh.

5) New API : Hundreds and thousand of new API’s are available to developers including “accelerate” API’s which allow them to add hardware acceleration and allow data to be encrypted inside their applications too.

6) Game Center : Apple is serious about gaming this time. That’s why they announced Gaming to be one of the major part of the ‘seven pillars’ features. It means Apple is rolling out a social gaming platform like Xbox or PSN for users to connect games with other users, by the end of the year.

7) iAd : Steve Jobs says ” users like free apps, developers like to make some money.” He also states that “The average user spends over 30 minutes using apps on their phone. If we said we wanted to put an ad up every 3 minutes, that’d be 10 ads per device per day ‚ about the same as a TV show. We’re going to soon have 100m devices. That’s a billion ad opportunities per day!” It means Apple is coming with a adplugin for app developers called iAd.

Their philosophy is that rather than external advertising links which pulled users to some other window while tapping on the ad, developers now can place a plugin to keep people in the app while still showing them advertising. It’s basically a tool for developers and you would not able to see until summers or later part of this year.

Some more feature of Apple iPhone 4.0 OS :

  • Custom Backgrounds
  • 5x Digital Zoom
  • Bluetooth Keyboard Support

2 Features which are still lacking

  • Printing Support
  • Front Faced Camera

So these are some cool features which are coming to Apple iPhone 4.0 OS and developers get access the preview from today and it will be launching on the next iPhone, the iPhone 3GS and the third generation iPod this summers. All these devices runs every applications and support every features but some of the features like multi-tasking will not be supported in iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 2G.

Nice article thanks. Its concise and saves me listening to Steve Jobs spouting off for an hour! Maybe run a spell check next time though. :)

  8. Tim says:

Contrary to your title, these features are neither awesome nor exciting.

    Let’s analyse:

    1. Multitasking – Apple is late. Would you be excited if Ford announced they are introducing the wheel?
    2. Folders – Again, Apple is late. This is found in about every other good mobile OS.
    3. Totally new Mail features – gawk, boring.
    4. iBooks – not a feature, more like an Apple money-making lock-in
    5. New API – now this is exciting. But let’s see how this plays out for innovation in apps.
    6. Game Center – albeit being a feature, it sure looks like a new phase in Apple money-making lock-in.
    7. iAd – how is Ads a feature for us, users? It’s a feature for developers … and Apple. If I am correct, Apple is taking 40% of all ad profits with their scheme. Again… Apple money-making lock-in.

    So,
    - 3/7 are new to the iPhone universe, but yesterdays news to the rest of the Mobile word.
    - 3/7 are meant for direct Apple profit, using Apple’s much feared ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ terms and conditions.

    • Well I respect your views but as per me everyone’s got unique perspective about everything. I believe there are lots of Apple fans out there to whom these features are awesome. Because these are the only features in which iPhone was behind others.

As far as iBooks and iAds are concerned, its obviously money making thing for apple but surely helpful for users (in case of iBooks because book reader is also coming) and developers (in case of iAds because they are the only one who developed applications for users, so they have full right to earn money)

I hope I am able to clear my view of point. But still I am open to discuss further on this topic :)

Once again, thanks for dropping by a comment and sharing your thoughts about the post with us.

  9. I really disapointed I am going to have buy a new Iphone because the multitasking option isn’t going to work on my current one. Other then that the OS looks pretty sweet. Nice post *Thumbs up*

    • Ya its not supported for the earlier models. I believe that’s really disappointment for iPhone 2G users as this is main functionality which was lacking. I believe they will surely look into this matter.

By the way, thanks for the heads up :)

  10. hey I like this post. I found it from doing a google search. Ive been looking for this sort of thing for a while. This info will come in handy to me. I will check back soon to search the rest of your blog. thanks

  11. I use my iPhone mainly for the email feature (on the go). I’m not always next to a computer to stay update and the industry I am in has a high demand for email communications, Especially since I cater to clients on a global level.

So, for me, I have to say that the email feature tweaking was greatly needed and a savior to guys like me. Make life so much easier. I can’t really speak for the other features, as I don’t use them much. My iPod is more of a pocket mail box than anything.. lol

  12. Thanks dude, I didn’t new that, thanks.
