Microsoft Security Essential – Free Virus Remover Tool from Microsoft Team

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times. via Microsoft

I know you are already using security software, but I think Microsoft Security Essentials might be a good option for your personal computer or laptop. Because firstly this is from Microsoft team and most of all free for all those who are using Genuine Windows OS.

Microsoft Security Essentials is available for Windows XP 32-bit (8.61MB)Windows Vista/7 32-bit (4.28MB), and Windows Vista/7 64-bit (4.71MB). Microsoft warns that MSE should not be installed with any other security software. It builds upon Windows Defender by offering both real-time protection and on-demand scanning for all types of malware.

System Requirements

Operating System: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7

  • For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 256 MB RAM or higher.
  • For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 1.0 GHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher.
  • VGA display of 800 × 600 or higher.
  • 140 MB of available hard disk space.
  • An Internet connection is required for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • Internet Browser:
    • Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
    • Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later.

Installation

Installation is very quick, let us see the Installation procedure step-by-step. Welcome screen will come when you install it for the first time, click next

Accept the MSE Lincense Agreement to proceed further with the installation

As I told you earlier, MSE is only for Genuine Windows OS. So this step validate that you are using Genuine OS or not. Click Validate to check, if your Windows is validated you will be moved to next step, otherwise installation will fail.

After Validation of your OS, click on Install button to proceed further.

Once, Installation is complete, MSE would notify you to scan computer, I would recommend it to do that.

Now, MSE installation is complete and it will automatically re-directed to Virus updates and definitions page.

How MSE works

To perform a System Scan, you can select from any one of the three options, Quick, Full, or Custom. I went for the Custom Scan from which you can choose the exact drive or destination that you would like to scan and click OK.

This is how hone windows looks like when a threat is detected.

It seems like a Trojan is there in my computer, which my old virus removal tool was unable to detect. Now to clean this Trojan, click on Clean Computer button.

Now my computer is save from Trojan, thanks to MSE.

Verdict

Microsoft Security Essentials is easy to use and the best thing is it doesn’t take too much of your computer’s memory. But I am impressed with MSE more because as you see that it detected and removed a Trojan which my earlier Software Remover Tool was unable to detect.

Also it’s totally free, no registrations, trial versions, or license renewals required. Automatic updates work really fine and all the functions are activated with a single-click. Based on all above facts, I would recommend you to give this product a shot because it’s from the Microsoft Team and also awarded best malware removal from AV-Comparatives.

Great light weight AV from Microsoft. And the best part is, it keeps getting considerably better with every update.

  2. Sukhjit Singh says:

I used it 2 months back. Wasn’t impressed at all.

First the updates gave me headache. Every time the updates used to fail.
And second it doesn’t look like its working. I didn’t knew I had viruses on my PC till I installed Kaspersky after uninstalling it.

    • Yogesh Mankani says:

Don’t know bro, but it working fine for me. Automatic updates are really great, it’s getting better and better for me with every update. And the strange thing is it detected and deleted the virus which Kaspersky was not able to detect.

I think some luck problem is there, lol :)

    • qwertyman says:

Sukhjit Singh, this antivirus is superb and if u dont know how to use it, better dont use,,, it does not give people headache.. u should be grateful it is FREE!! burn your PC instead.

      • Sukhjit Singh says:

OMG U a microsoft emloyee or what! Dude get a life! It sucks! It is nowhere near avast or avira in free antivirus race! i agree it is simple to use but the update thingy and other shits make it a huge FAIL. And next time don’t ask me to burn my PC. I love my PC and it is better than you noob!
and I request you again to GET A LIFE. Get with the thing that people may not like what you like!

I’ve been using MSE since it was first released. I have never had a virus get past it on any of my 5 computers. I don’t know why you have such a problem with it. In most cases, if it doesn’t work properly, you have a bogus version of the Windows OS on your system and the validation software that is part of the Security Suite is busting you out. I have had viruses get past a ton of other anti-virus suites such as Avast, AVG and Norton and MSE has been able to pick up on every one of them. I don’t for the life of me understand how anyone can have such a hard time with such a simple program. It is by far the easiest Security software I have ever used and it is so light on the system, you would almost not know it is there.

Thanks for sharing mate, even I had heard lot of buzz about Avast, so surely give it a try after a while for sure :)

    • Tom says:

Believe it or not, the same features are in this suite, they are just in the background. I have never used a better Antivirus Suite and I highly recommend it. I have 5 computers and I run MSE on every one of them. They are very stable and I have never had anything get past it. It finds trojans and tracking cookies quite reliably and my internet speed is always stable.

  5. The file size for Windows Vista 64 bit is not 4.7 mb, but 7 mb. No big deal, just For Some band-width concious’s info

Well, but MSE build already trust for me because already detect 2 or more viruses and automatic updates working fine for me. I will recommend you to try it once and do share your views after some days.

Having problems updating. Can you help please

  12. Hitesh Manglani says:

    Hey Yogesh,

I had downloaded MSE yesterday for my Windows 7/64 bit OS(the file name was
    mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
but after installing the first update did not complete
i was dissappointed and started searching for alternatives like Avast and Avira and reading content comparing these.
Today morning read ur post and was keen on trying to install MSE once again, i used the link on this blog but the file name was
    mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7_1.exe
and after using this one the MSE updated and started scanning my computer. What a relief, thnx bro :)

  13. Hitesh Manglani says:

Oh on second thoughts one more reason could be that i had not uninstalled my trial subscription of McAfee Anti Virus

  14. Vans says:

I’ve heard the MSE from my friend and I had installed, but when the update process often fails. Finally I am back to using AVG

  15. Rabin says:

    never used/not using any anti-virus software :?
even when i was on XP. sometimes used avg for some downloaded files but the rest were none

    • Tom says:

Wow! No Antivirus Software? How often do you need to replace your hard drive? The dumbest thing you can do is expose yourself to hackers. Are you not even remotely educated as to how people steal your personal and financial information? I think you are foolish to think that operating an unprotected computer is a good thing. Even MACs are becoming susceptible to viruses.

  16. Gaz says:

I’m gonna give MSE a chance….think I used it a while back on my lappy, so am gonna give it a go on ma desktop…I’m sure I had no probs with it, and found it simple to use. At the moment I am using Norton Antivirus 2010, and I’m not overly impressed, I used Norton Internet Security 2008, when I bought my PC, but thats ran out…so heres hopin kids….I’ll keep ya’s posted!!!!!!

    • Tom says:

      Gaz,

I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. It’s the only Security software I use and nothing gets past it. I have had Norton Security Suite fail on me several times and it is way to heavy on the system resources. Keep using MSE. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how stable your system stays. Great software developed by the makers of Windows. If anyone knows how to keep a computer virus free, it should be Microsoft.

  17. Ninja Nurse says:

I had OneCare anti virus, was doing fine, then it was getting close to renew, and they are not renewing ANY (going out of business or something).
They recommended MSE. Make sure everyone knows this: You CANNOT run more than ONE anti virus program on your PC. It does NOT give you MORE protection – it can actually work adversely. OK so I removed One Care, then download MSE. It keeps telling me to turn it ON; warns not protected. I click on it, and there’s the BIG RED BUTTON which I click on to TURN ON MSE. Doesn’t work. Try it 12 more times. Doesn’t work. So I remove the MSE program, and HERE AM I looking to either RE-install it, or see if there is a BETTER option. I Fear clicking onto a site that will GIVE my PC a virus or worse. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thanks.

  18. Sammy says:

Hey man..This is a superb anti virus program..!!
well…some people dont have a VALIDATED copy of windows so can you also post some ways to install it in pirated editions of WINDOWS..??
    thanks once again.!

  19. John says:

By not using the program with “any other security software” does this mean other antivirus software or does it also include other antipsyware software such as super anti spyware, malwarebytes etc..? Please respond to my email

  20. Ivan says:

It’s very slow almost hand up my computer when scanning. It delete some of my instalation programs. After 2 days I removed it. It’s free but other free AV are way better then this try of free AV.

  21. hattaz says:

    thanks dude..

finally installed MSE on my laptop.

  22. rijans says:

I am also using MSE. But the problem is, it has very less functionality. I think kaspersky is better though it’s not free.

  23. SREEKANTH says:

iam finally installed MSE in my pc iam hop that its better than others

  24. Wow, a free software from Microsoft, this must be new, thanks for sharing.

  25. kendra says:

  26. Mohsin Butt says:

I have just installed lets whats its result should be taken, anyhow i just uninstalled Kasper due to system slow deown and hang problem.

  27. Justin says:

I downloaded but when I go to open to install, I don’t know what to open with? nothing is working.. please help!!

    • David says:

Justin, do you get a validation window? I think you just double click the file name. I am guessing it is a .exe. File
Do you have a valid copy of windows? That seems to be a problem.
I use mainly Mac so just guessing
