16 Best PC Games of 2009

In terms of seeing large number of brand new games in all genres, you could say that the PC platform might have seen better days. The business of PC games seems to be growing huge, the gaming arena have brought in a change to the technology world.

2009 had a great year for PC gaming with some truly excellent games that are worth trying, worth playing and a great reason to be a PC game player.

In this article, I have put together a list of  my Top Games of the previous year. While putting this list together, I was amazed at how different they are in terms of genre, graphics and storyline.

1) Dragon Age/Origins (Fantasy)

Dragon Age/Origins is a fantasy computer role playing game that takes players on a journey across the Kingdom of Ferelden on the continent of Thedas. After many had thought them extinct, Dragons have reappeared in the World. Dragon Age: Origins, as the title suggests, has an over arching story/plot surrounding this new “Dragon Age” which is intertwined differently depending both on the type of character being played and the actions players take throughout the game. This gives the opportunity for Dragon Age Origins to have a different ending and story each time it’s played.

2) Left 4 Dead 2 (Horror)

Left 4 Dead 2 is a successive series of Left 4 Dead and it doesn’t break any new ground but it does is improve upon nearly every aspect of the original game with new characters, zombies, game modes and more all help to make it a must have from this year’s crop of video games. In this game, players take on the role of a survivor who must shoot themselves out of zombie and mutant infested environments and make it to a safe zone/extraction point.

3) Batman: Arkham Asylum (Superhero)

Batman: Arkham Asylum exposes players to a unique, dark and atmospheric adventure that takes them to the depths of Arkham Asylum – Gotham’s psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Gamers will move in the shadows, instigate fear amongst their enemies and confront The Joker and Gotham City’s most notorious villains who have taken over the asylum.Using a wide range of Batman’s gadgets and abilities, players will become the invisible predator and attempt to foil The Joker’s demented scheme.

4) Empire : Total War (Historical)

Empire : Total War is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics computer game developed by The Creative Assembly and published by Sega. Players choose a contemporary 18th century faction and set out to ensure that faction’s domination over the known world through military force, politics, diplomacy, espionage and economics. Although the campaign element of the game is turn-based, players can direct battles in real-time. 

5) Borderlands (Sci-Fi)

Borderlands is a science fiction role-playing shooter (a first-person shooter with RPG elements) that was developed by Gearbox Software.  The game features a groundbreaking content generation systems allowing for near-endless variety in weapons and item drops. Broderlands allows for 4 players to share same game experience simultaneously online in co-op play.

6) Street Fighter IV (Action)

Street Fighter IV is a fighting game that was first released as an upright arcade game back in 2008. It then made it’s way to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in early 2009 and finally was made available for Windows based PCs on July 7, 2009.

7) Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (Modern Military)

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 story takes place in a fictional near-future, where a radical leader has staged a coup d’état in the Middle East, and an “Ultranationalist” movement has instigated a civil war in Russia. The events of the conflicts are seen from the perspectives of an American Marine and a British SAS commando, and are set in multiple locations, including the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Prypiat, Ukraine. The multiplayer portion of the game features various game modes, and contains a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons, weapon attachments, and camouflage schemes as they advance.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of WarII One of the early releases this year, Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II has remained one of the best of the year. With four playable armies, the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids and a new style of game play, Dawn of War II improves upon the original real time strategy game.

9) Resident Evil 5(Action-Thriller)

Resident Evil 5 Chris Redfield, hero from the original Resident Evil game, is back in Resident Evil 5. Set 10 years since the events of the first game Resident Evil 5 takes place in a fictionalized west African region. Chris and Sheva Alomar are on a mission to capture an arms dealer before he is able to sell a bio weapon on the black market. Along the way they encounter scores of parasite infected zombies know as Majini.

10) Arma II(Modern Military)

Arma II ARMA II is modern military tactical action game in which players controls a squad of troops through various combat missions that can include both land and air vehicles. The game is set in a fictitious eastern European country named Chernarus, whose control fought over by pro-democractic and pro-communist factions. 11) Fallout 3(Action)

Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 36 years after the setting of Fallout 2 and 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse that devastated the game’s world in a future where World War III occurred in the second half of the 21st century. The game places the player in the role of an inhabitant of Vault 101, a survival shelter designed to protect a small number of humans from the nuclear fallout. When the player character’s father disappears under mysterious circumstances, he or she is forced to escape from the Vault and journey into the ruins of Washington D.C. to track him down. The game has an attribute and combat system typical of an action strategy game but also incorporates elements of first-person shooter and survival horror games.

12) Torchlight(Fantasy)

Torchlight is an action role-playing game developed by Runic Games, released for Windows in October 2009. The fantasy-themed game is set in the fictional town of Torchlight and the expansive caverns and dungeons nearby, which adventurers explore to collect valuable loot and battle hordes of monsters.

13) Dirt 2(Car Racing)

Dirt 2 is a racing game released in September 2009, and is the sequel to Colin McRae: Dirt.The game includes many new race-events, including stadium events. Along with the player, an RV travels from one event to another, and serves as ‘headquarters’ for the player. It features a roster of contemporary off-road events, taking players to diverse and challenging real-world environments.

14) Red Faction:Guerrilla(Action)

Red Faction:Guerrilla is a third-person shooter video game developed by Volition, Inc. In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the player takes the role of a Alec Mason as he assists the Red Faction to disrupt and overthrow the Earth Defense Force (EDF) on Mars.

15) Mirror’s Edge(Action)

16) Fallen Earth(Sci-Fi)

Fallen Earth is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set on a post-apocalyptic Earth in the year 2156. Six factions struggle for dominance in the Province. Over time, you’ll have the chance to pick a side in the effort to hold sway over what remains of the post-Fall world.

Not only these are my favorites, I know the game freaks out there surely like these games already. These are not only the best looking video games of the previous year, but also renowned for the game plot and character groups.
